Our cousin Mel, A great guy who will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He had such a happy smile that radiated to all who were around him, such that we smiled more ourselves.
We will miss him at the get-togethers that we often had, but know that having his loved family in our area and available to see and talk to, can help us remember those many good times we were able to enjoy with Mel and them. You can be sure that we will be available to the family for discussions that they wish to have.
Our deep sadness and sincere sympathy go to the family, Evelyn, Valerie, Mindy, Stephen and their beautiful families.

Noelle Vanadia Spidalieri posted a condolence
Wednesday, October 31, 2012
I have been given the privilege to speak on behalf of our family for the life we shared with our own superhero, Carmine Moliterno. I am Noelle, Carmine's 2nd born grandchild and I have learned, observed, and admired my grandfather for nearly 29 years and counting. The first thing Poppy would want me to do is thank you all for being here and tell you how much he loved each and every one of you. And believe me, he did. The next thing he would want me to say is not to waste the day being sad, but to celebrate the life that he had and remember the good times we all shared together. I know that will be tough for us all, myself largely included, but for the man that never stopped smiling, even on his very last, trying days on earth, it must be so.
Although rationally we all knew that one day Poppy would leave us to reunite with his much beloved departed family members, sing duets with Frank Sinatra, and hobnob with the big guy himself, deep within each and everyone of us, we all found it unimaginable…impossible, even, because technically, superheroes never die. And Poppy, by all definitions of the word, was, is, and will always be a superhero.
Sure he didn't wear fancy capes, morph or mutate, or even take off in the night in a shiny black sports car, but Poppy had so many unique, characteristics and attributes that you simply don't encounter in common man.
Just take his hands for starters. Poppy may have been all hugs and kisses on the inside, but on the outside his hands meant business. Best described as mitts, his hands were strong and wide, and exuded power. Truly built for a hero, they were designed to guard, protect, and comfort the people he loved most in the world. Those hands knew no fear, from killing bugs dead with one swift whack, giving his opponents in the boxing ring the old one-two, and courageously protecting our country as he served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
It was those hands that earned him many prestigious accolades including The Bronze Star and The Purple Heart. The very same hands that protectively took his wife Evelyn's hand in marriage, first held the hands of his children, Valerie, Mindy, and Stephen and hands that built the most impeccable brick wall outside the home that protected them. His hands were so big and wide they engulfed your shoulders and protected you like a coat of armor.
As for the Grandkids, to us, Poppy's hands were home. They were the hands that warmly enveloped us at the door, the hands that would pat our backs when our parents would give us a hard time, the hands that would fool us into looking in one direction to divert our attention while he bit off half of our ice pops, hands that would fiercely grab our faces and rub them on his scruffy face, and the hands that served as musical instruments, melodically banging Caledonia on the dining room table and beating the rhythm of the jazz songs we learned to love on the wheel of the car.
Like most heroes, Poppy was better known for his pseudo names than his actual birth name of Carmine Anthony. Grammy and his friends called him Mel, his kids called him "Dah," and referred to him as "Daddy," my dad, his son-in-law called him Sconzie, we his Grandchildren called him Poppy, and others called him Carmels, Melly, and occasionally Socrates. But it was his older sister Mary who most aptly called him Sunny. Always singing, always dancing, and always smiling, he lit up a room with his sunny disposition, warm heart, contagious happiness, and that glowing smile. Poppy had a song and a limerick for everything. As Grammy puts it, he thought life was one big Broadway musical. Never wanting any one situation to get too serious, mid-argument, temper tantrum, or gripe, Poppy would undoubtedly break out into song, immediately lightening the mood or calling you out on your unnecessary dramatics teasing, "you don't like eggplant? Eggplant never said anything bad about you…" Sometimes it could be unnerving but deep down we all knew it was just our Sunny wanting to alleviate our frustrations and cherish the life he knew was short.
True to the superhero formula, Poppy was courageous and brave, strong and reliable, strategic and astute, a natural born leader, philosophical, loyal and trustworthy. Though Poppy may not have had magical supernatural skills like the ability to fly, be invisible, or scale walls, Poppy's unparalleled superpower is his amazing, unconditionally loving and accepting heart. Poppy was thoughtful, sensitive, and undemanding. He loved and accepted people as they were and helped us mere mortals learn to laugh, smile, and shrug off the unimportant, innocuous trials and tribulations of life. He had a power for seeing the world differently, for living and cherishing each and everyday, and for making everyone who knew him instantly fall in love with him, leaving us wanting to be better, more loving, caring, and accepting people just like him.
Pardon my French Poppy, but you really did have a joie de vivre. Poppy loved life, loved music, dancing, and singing, loved smiling, laughing and making people laugh, and true to our family's genetic code, he loved eating. Above all, he lived for the time he spent with his family where he shared all of the many things he loved about life. Sunday dinners were a sacred time for Poppy, celebrating the day with a Rob Roy in hand, a crackling fire in the background, music blaring from the stereo while indulging in some assorted cured meats and cheeses, Grammy's famous meatballs, and macaroni and gravy. And each and every time, he would quip: "What's the rest of the world doing on Sunday?"
But every superhero has his kryptonite and as we sit here today, saddened to have lost our Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, Cousin, and friend, we should be reminded, this is no ordinary man. So dry your eyes, because superheroes live forever. Though departed from our tangible grasp, our immortal superhero will always be with us. Our Sunny one so true, we love you.

What can I say, yesterday and today have been the hardest and sadest so far. I think the reality of never seeing your rosy cheeks or beautiful smile again is beginning to sink in. It has left me with a hole in my heart that will never go away. I will always remember all that we did together, I went everywhere with you. I was your side kick who, every sunday, accompanied you to Stephen's football games. We went food shopping together, hung my senior show together, you drove me everywhere - we laughed listening to Imus in the morning, you even went to the furrier with me to get my hat and muff for my wedding day! You gave me many endearing nicknames - Miss Aruba, hard hearted Hanna, the razor's edge, acrabe, and my all time favorite...MAC, as we shared our "miller nips" at Albertus!! I have been blessed to have spent the past 53 years with you and to call you Dad, you are the BEST!
All the pain and grief is over and you are home safe in heaven - I will love you forever.

Da, I can't believe this day has arrived. I've been dreading it for so long, fighting it as hard as I possibly could, praying for another year, another family occasion that you would survive and so I am obviously very sad. I don't know what I am going to do without your smiling face, soothing voice, and gentle demeanor. it feels like my heart will never mend. I have been blessed to have had such a special father, and for as long as I have, especially when most of my friends lost theirs so much sooner. I have such gratitude that God gave you almost 2 more years with me to see your great grandson become a typical Moliterno boy and dance at your granddaughter's wedding when we thought you might not be well enough to even attend. So I will try not to be upset and instead I will remember how lucky I have been, how much fun we had, how loving you always were, and how much you taught me. Given the number of people who came to visit you tonight and the flowers they sent and the number of times they told me what a great guy you were, and the friends of over 70 years you have, it's obvious that you impacted a whole lot of people and I am also so proud of you. You will always live in my heart. I love you my sweet daddy. Thank you for always watching over me.

Dad,
If there is such a thing as a perfect human being it would have been you! I say this because you were a perfect father and friend and more than any son could have ever asked for. My life will never be the same without you and I am grateful for every day that we spent together. I can never be thankful enough for all that you given to me, how proud I am of you or how much you mean to me. My only regret is that I did not get to tell you this enough. Thank you for allowing me to live every son's dream which was to work and play with my father every day.
All of my love forever and I will miss you!
Your beloved son, Stephen

Working with Mel and Stephen was a memorable part of my life. No matter how bad the weather or how uncomfortable the job, there were always some good times at the end of the day.
Mel would always engage us in a daily guessing game of who called the office that day...his usual answer was 'that guy', who? Mr Jones? "No,that other guy"
We'll miss him.

We want to recognize and celebrate my dear brother Mel / and my Uncle Mel’s life, which was so appropriately captured in his solider portrait. The same picture of the handsome, brave U.S. army hero sits in my (Phyllis’) bedroom. When we both look at his gentle countenance, we proudly remember his patriotism in defending his country and how God spared his life, his gifted accomplishments in business, and most importantly his steadfast love and devotion for his family. Perhaps his greatest attribute was his jovial and tender demeanor. His hug was inviting, his laugh was infectious, and his humorous stories about friends, family or his adventures in life always entertained and totally captivated our attention. His smile could light up a room, while his laughter would make everyone happy and dispel any worries. We are thankful to God for his life and legacy and will cherish him in our hearts and minds always. We love you with an everlasting love.
