My condolences to all of the Foleys. I remember our families spending summers at Coveleigh Club , swimming and playing tennis, and how fond I was of Jack. He was always so much fun with us kids! He was quite special.

Jack Foley was one of the nicest men in the world. He and Pat and our parents were friends for years and we always loved it when the Foleys were around. Both he and Pat were an incredible help to our mother and us during our father’s illness and wonderful support to our mother after our Dad died, and until her death. We will never forget them and are honored to have had them in our lives for 50+ years.
The family of Elaine and Dick McHugh

Anyone who spent even a small amount of time with Jack knew what a special person he was. In addition to being whip smart, he was generous, kind, and humble. He was the most charming person I have ever known. He could and did make a desk clerk’s or flight attendant’s day just by pausing to ask how their day was going. And he would leave adversaries smiling even as he was picking their pockets. In times of great stress with lots of money on the line - virtually every case Jack handled - he was the calm, cool professional who kept everything in perspective. Intelligence, integrity, and more than a little charm would win the day - and it always did.
I hope Jack’s family who he loved so dearly will take great pride in knowing that he enriched so many lives, including mine.

In my note below I left out one amazingly coincidental factoid about Jack and me. He and I actually served aboard the same ship in the Navy (decades apart of course) - the USS Yosemite. We often laughed about the fact that when Jack served, during wartime, the "Yo-Yo" was nicknamed "The Fighting Lady", but by the time I reported aboard, years later at the tail end of my (and its) Navy days, in peacetime, the aging Yo-Yo had been downgraded to the sadly less-inspiring sobriquet "The Busy Lady"...

Jack was one of the greatest men I have ever known. I had the great privilege and good fortune to work closely with him during his years at Marsh. I was the company's litigation lawyer who relied on Jack time and again to wade into a thorny complex insurance claim problem and get it resolved before the legal papers started flying. Jack could disarm the most unreasonable cantankerous opponents with his smarts, his wit and his charm. Then when everyone seemed satisfied, the dust settled and we headed back to the office he would say with a twinkle in his eye, "boy, we pulled his pants down, didn't we...?" Jack and I traveled the world together, including one notable trip to Stockholm along with our trusted outside counsel, Mitch Auslander, where we had a nasty claim involving a Swedish steel mill located north of the Arctic Circle. We traveled there in December - I remember the beautiful Christmas lights is Stockholm - and I also remember the complete absence of light (daylight) as we flew north to the plant where the sun barely rose above the winter horizon and the temperature rarely rose above freezing. The details of the complex settlement that Jack helped negotiate have pretty much faded for me, but I'll never forget that trip. Jack was as much at home in the fancy dining room of the Grand Hotel in Stockholm as he was in that fiery and frozen steel mill - a man for every stage, a man for the ages. As a eulogist once said about another great man: "We mourn today that he has died, but we will remember forever that he lived." Amen and RIP, my friend, the world is a poorer place without you.

We will always remember with love and respect the kindness Mr. Foley showed our family.
They say the good ones leave us to early.
They also say there is an exception to every rule. Jack Foley was the exception and a exceptional man..

My condolence to Jack's family. Jack was just plain and simple a wonderful person. I knew Jack at Marsh. He was one of the first people I met at Marsh in 1980 at 1221 Ave. of the Americas in our small library. I was a real rookie claims guy, and we discussed the claim issue I was researching. He gave me some tips and from then on, I would seek him out for advice and help. We handled a number of claim/coverage issues together through the years (with Jack setting the stage with the insurers) he would say, why don't you take this one. He was always straight up with the situation and told it like it was a good lesson for working with clients. He approached problems in a calm manner and could walk into a contentious meeting and calm everyone down. When he spoke, everyone listened. He was generous with credit to others and a great guy. Jack was a big part of my time at Marsh and certainly helped shape how I deal with business issues. Tom Falzarano

Jack and I were something like "ships passing in the night". I joined Marsh & McLennan within less than a year of his retirement, but Jack and I were on the same floor, and I was the new Aviation Department Claims Manager. Jack came in to see me shortly after my arrival and said, "Are they taking care of you?" I said they were, but from that day on, for the next seven or eight months, I had the privilege of visiting with Jack and talking about issues and Marsh/Mac in general, and he was always gracious and helpful. I knew from the first moment that he was a special man. The term "old school" might be pejorative today, but not to me. Jack was old school (and so am I) he was a gentle-man; wise and of deep insight and character. He had a professionalism and a humanity that is so lacking in our world today. The humanity was always there. I can't say I emulated Jack, exactly, but I a way I did and still do. Nothing is more important to me than honesty and integrity and loyalty. The fact that I saw this in Jack supported me in my life's vision. He stopped by to see me on his last day, and although I was busy we spent a few moments together. I admired Jack. He was/is one of "the good guys". The world would not be in the mess it's in today if there were more men of God like Jack Foley around. Thanks Jack, you made a difference in my life. See you on the other side, I hope. Joe Franceski
