I recently came upon a photograph of Steve when he was working at Yellowstone N.P. in the 70's. So I decided to do a google search to see where he was. I was heartbroken to see that this dear man has passed away. You see, Steve was very special to our family at that time. My mother and father also worked at the park as well as myself and my older brother. Our family worked and lived in Yellowstone for 4 summers in the 1970's. We were a family of seven children who made a crazy journey from New England to the Rocky Mountains. It's a very long story but here is the important part...Our dear mother was diagnosed with terminal colon cancer at 42 years of age. In the last year of her life we met Steve. Steve and his friend Pam were so loving and kind to my younger siblings, ranging in age from 6 to 12 at that time. They took them on hiking trips such as sliding on snow fields on Mt. Washburn, picking wildflowers to give to our Mom, sharing dinners at our home, and just generally making our lives a little bit easier to bear. The picture I spoke of earlier is on one of the hikes up Wasburn with my baby sister and two of my little brothers. In the picture he has bushy black hair and a big, black beard. He is 6'5" of gentle giant. I am so sorry for your family and I wish I had looked him up sooner so I could thank him for his kindness. People like Steve you never forget, and even though we only knew him for a short time, we all fell in love with him. We lost our Dad in 2015 and whenever we would reminisce about those magical/ tragic days, my Dad would always bring up Steve and recall his fondness for him. It was clear to all of us that he would be a magnificent father one day and I can see by your photos he indeed was. God bless you all and as I pass this news on to my siblings we will all join in prayers for your comfort and thankfulness that our lives intersected with his. Warmest Regards, Patricia Lea - Draney, Idaho

I too just googled Stave to see if I could say hello and share memroies of a mutual friend from Duke who died. Steve and I were sophomore roommates at SAE fraternity. Neither of us were particularly "Greek;" it was just that joining a fraternity was the only way sophomores could be assured of getting a dowm room on campus at Duke. Steve was always the 'silent type,' which I was not. But we were friends and I alwys remembered Steve findly after we went our separate ways. Condolences to the (surprisingly!) large family.
