Bonnie,
So sorry to read of Stephen's passing in the NYTimes. Toby and I are living on Mackinac Island year round as we sold our home in Vermont just last September. We still have too many acres left there to sell as our girls live in Colorado. We sold the Inn in 1999 yet lived in a nearby town in southern VT - for a total of 41 years - Vermont. The Inn was a big part of our life for 21 years and I remember your visit with us. Toby was just recalling how he heard Stephen speaking at an outdoor restaurant in Brooklyn Heights many years ago - probably over 35 years ago - and Toby turned around and said Stephen Dietrich - and that was how they re-connected after so many years prior - when they both worked for Arnold Transit Co on the Island. Toby enjoyed his companionship and that of his brother, Kim, as well. We are truly sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry for your loss. Stephen was so witty, creative and fun. He had a enviable passion for learning, and I was impressed with all the language lessons and music lessons he was taking soon after retirement. My most vivid memories of him were when he so often made Bonnie laugh. Their deep love was so evident in the way he teased her and she would light up brightly and laugh with such complete joy.
