Condolences to Dr Gillette's family. I met Dr. Gillette while interning (1998, Brklyn College) at the SUNY HIV / AIDS Ed Research Ctr. He was so inspirational to me that I took leave of one semester to work with him in both that dept and Sickle cell Clinic. Indelible experiences.

I’m just seeing the news about my favorite doctor’s death (March 2024). I was one of his Sickle Cell patients, and I wanted to visit him in Kings County Hospital where he took care of me for years before I moved out of NY. For some reason I decided to google him to make sure he hadn’t retired, but unfortunately saw he passed away in 2020.
Dr. Gillete was not just a doctor but also a father to most of his patients myself included. There was never a day he didn’t have time to listen, he made me very comfortable whenever I was admitted or just visited for regular appointments. He talked me vividly through any ongoing clinical trials. He was just a loving doctor , and I wish all doctors were like him.
My sincerest condolences and prayers to his family. Indeed the Sickle Cell community has lost a great doctor. I miss him a lot. May he continue to keep resting.

I just heard that Dr. Gillette had died (February2024). I was one of his students during my HIV Clinical Scholars Fellowship in the mid 1990's. I'll never forget his capacity to make every patient encounter a learning experience, his capacity to share knowledge willingly and his all encompassing humanity. He is missed, there are few like him. Fare thee well Dr. Gillette.

My sincerest condolences to Dr. Gillette's family, with deepest sympathy for your loss. Dr. Gillette was larger than life, and his positive energy inspired many. He was a true humanitarian and a passionate physician, and had an insatiable thrill for research and discovery towards improving the lives of those around him. I will always keep him in my heart and aspire to be like him.
I was an ophthalmology resident at Kings County in 2018 doing my retina rotation when Dr. Gillette happened to walk into my clinic room at the end of a long clinic day and asked who he can speak to about doing retinal imaging in his sickle cell patients receiving oral medication to treat their disease. He wanted to see if there were any visible effects of the treatment in the retina. Randomly enough (or through providence), out of all the clinic rooms he could have walked in to, and out of all the ophthalmology residents he could have asked, he walked in to my room and asked me. Out of the ophthalmology residents at that time, I happened to be the guy doing advanced retinal imaging research at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai, studying how systemic disease effects the retina. My focus at the time was diabetes mellitus.
Through a few conversations with Dr. Gillette, I realized the deep passion and care that this individual held towards ameliorating the senseless suffering of his sickle cell patients. I was inspired by him to help and work with him to use advanced retinal imaging technologies to study the retinal microvasculature in sickle cell patients before and after oral therapy, to see if we can measure disease severity and treatment effect through the eye.
Dr. Gillette was very excited about the prospects of our research. He saw that to be able to grade disease severity and measure treatment response non-invasively through the eye would revolutionize the field. It was tough for me as a person in training to also manage doing a serious research project in parallel to training, and I remember Dr. Gillette encouraging me “Do it for real! If you’re going to spend time doing research, don’t do it just for your resume, make it count, do it for real!” To this day, having finished ophthalmology residency at SUNY Downstate and vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, and having continued research throughout, whenever I get discouraged, I still hear Dr. Gillette’s voice and see his glowing eyes and his energetic smile saying “Do it for real!”
Unfortunately, Dr. Gillette passed before we were able to publish our work. May he rest in peace.
Please find below links to the publications of our work, with Dr. Gillette listed as a co-author:

In his honor and in his memory, let’s continue doing it for real! Do things with a higher purpose and help your fellow person. That is Dr. Gillette’s legacy.
Sincerely and with warmest regards,

My deepest sympathy to Nedra and the Gillette family. Dr. Peter Gillette has attended to my mother, Margaret Butler, for over 45 years. The care he has provided to her has contributed to the longevity of her life. She is now approaching 70 years of age and she is doing so well thanks to the excellent care she has received from Dr. Gillette. Not only did he extend excellent care to her but he always had a kind and uplifting word for me as I sat by her bedside many times while she was in crisis. He was the epitome of excellence in the field of Hematology and now has many standing on his shoulders. May you rest in eternal peace, Dr. Gillette.

My deepest condolences to Nedra and his entire family at home.
Dr. Gillette was father and "grand" father to my entire household. Above and beyond our working hours, we were a family away from home. We celebrated our birthdays together! ...and boy did we put together parties.
It was a pleasure and an honor to be his student and colleague. He never missed a moment to offer his guidance/assistance, share information, incite meaningful discussion, consider outcomes, be witty and do it all simply! His loss will always be felt but the lessons he taught will have a long lasting, resounding impact on all of our lives. Thank you for sharing him with us.
I pray God will comfort all of you during this most difficult time.
Love Always,
Kisha, Yolande, Ashaki, A'dhayna, Kye and Seth

Bob and I first came to know Peter at Pine Ridge's Friday's at Five, where neighbors gathered to share their lives, a snack and a drink. He was always interested to hear your thoughts. I worked with him in our community garden as he worked out a watering system as well as erecting a cage protecting some of the plants. Along with Nedra, he was an enormous addition to the community and we will miss him. His contributions carry on.
Our hearts go out to Nedra and his family.
Sincerely
Kathy and Bob Ryan

Dear Mrs. Gillette & Family,
Please accept my condolences for the passing of Dr. Gillette. You know better than I that he was a wonderful and amazing man.
I nicknamed Dr. Gillette "The Elder Statesman", because he was deserving of that respect.
I will miss him dearly and light an Orange candle in representation of joy, creativity. the promotion of general wellness and emotional energy that Dr. Gillette shared. Also for his compassion, passion, and warmth towards the thousands of children and adults living with sickle cell disease that he cared for throughout his career.
May God bless and keep you family in his embrace.
Respectfully,
Ginger Davis
