I just learned of this very sad news from a former colleague at RVA, where Craig and I worked fresh out of school in the model shop.
I always knew Craig was both the nicest as well as the smartest of people, especially for ultimately marrying Shizuka from 'upstairs' at RVA.
Fast forward a few years and I was able to finally join Craig at PPA, where he provided a welcome and always very sharing demeanor.
Sorry we lost touch over the years, but Craig was always an inspiration to be a great architect, loving father, and warm person to all. My heart goes out to Shizuka and your family.

I didn’t know Craig all at well at Cornell but I do remember him as one of the nicest guys in studio. I also remember that he had mad drawing skills and we chatted sometimes about drawing. He was a calming presence in the storm of crazy ego-maniacal architecture students and professors that was studio life. I always thought I’d run into him again...My condolences to his family and friends.

So sorry to hear about Craig's passing. I have known Craig only for a few years through our work at Princeton University - though that was easily long enough to have developed a deep respect and admiration for the passion and calm leadership he brought to his work. His passing serves as a reminder of how precious our time is.
My condolences to Craig's family.

Echoing the voices of so many others, Craig represented the best of us. I only knew him professionally and there he was always kind, thoughtful, passionate, and generous with his time and praise. I can't think of a time that he didn't have a smile on his face. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to work alongside him on two outstanding projects. He is greatly missed already and his memory will never be forgotten.

The quiet MVP of Ennead, Craig elevated every conversation he was in – with his exceptional knowledge, the generosity of his spirit, his infectious optimism and curiosity, and his genuinely kind heart. I am grateful for having had the chance to know him. This world is diminished by his absence. My deep condolences to his family, of whom he spoke with such affection, on their immeasurable loss.

Craig was a wonderful husband and father. He always gave us a big smile when we ran into each other in Larchmont. I know how proud he was of Kay and Ian. They are very good violin and viola players and I remember that he enjoyed the orchestra concerts. Sending lots of love to Shizuka, Kay, and Ian.

Craig: we are broken by your passing, taken from this world too soon and longing to understand why. Such brightness in your life, evident from the magnificence of your creations, the hearts and minds of people you have touched, the family you hold dearest. Your example in this imperfect world is one we can all only hope to attain; your mark upon us all will carry forth your legacy. Our gratitude for the time we had with you, for showing us the finest of humanity, and for sharing yourself - the best damn architect most of us will ever know.

I worked with Craig on the Belfer Research Building for many years while I was at Ennead. Starting as a very green young architect I was assigned to help out on CA for this incredibly complex building. Despite his very busy schedule Craig always took the time to sit down and explain how I should properly review a submittal and no matter how minor the task he always made me feel that my contribution to the project was important. Craig was not only a great Architect, but he was also a great mentor and teacher. A combination that is rare to find in any profession, and one that made his mark on the practice of architecture indelible.

Craig was the ultimate professional, but more importantly a truly good person. He will always be a model for me. I have so many fond memories of our work together. In particular, a Saturday afternoon that Kay (who was about age 5) joined him at the office. She did some drawing and then sat on Craig's lap, facing him, while he worked. She sat quietly embracing him for several hours. Both were content.

We met Craig through our daughter’s friendship at the Japanese Weekend School. Craig is one of nicest and kindest people we have had the pleasure of knowing.
Our daughters and sons are the same age and we all became close family friends. We always enjoyed Craig’s company and shared many family events together. Every year, we would enjoy Japanese New Year food, have an extra birthday celebration for all our kids (March/April born) and spend Japanese sports day together.
Craig, you will be deeply missed and there is no way fill the big void you leave. But please rest in peace, knowing that there is a loving and supportive community here to help your wonderful family.

Craig,
Words fail to express our grief and disbelief.
Some of us had the privilege of knowing you since you were freshman at college. I was blessed to have known you both as a classmate and as a colleague.
Looking back at these photos, it is evident that the seed of your professionalism that came to define you as an architect’s architect, as many have already noted, was clearly present at that stage; your razor-sharp focus and your calm demeanor that put those around you at ease have earned the trust of your friends and colleagues alike. We will miss you.
My sincere condolences to your family - please continue to watch over them.
When Frank and I get to join you, let the three of us go sneak into some building up above and rearrange furniture in all the rooms, like we did one night many, many years ago.

Craig was the fist person I got to know well when I joined Polshek back in 1999. Sitting next to him in those tiny 8th floor work stations, I learned a lot. The poor guy must have answered hundreds of my questions about MicroStation that first year. Craig was also the manager of the Polshek softball team when I joined the office. He will always be part of my memoires of that great time playing ball games in Central Park and grabbing post game drinks with the team. I miss those days and I will miss Craig.

Loretta, Lynn, Shizuka, Kay and Ian: please know how important Craig was to his friends and colleagues. He was a leader, a patient and caring mentor, a trusted and respected ally to our clients, and a kind and trusted friend. Craig and I shared much in common- raising multi-cultural children, passion for architecture and theater, and coincidentally a common birthdate. I remember fondly all the time we spent together: working, travelling and sharing numerous meals at Dinah's poolside garden restaurant and our favorite Japanese restaurant Fuki Sushi in Palo Alto. My heart goes out Craig's family. Please know how well loved Craig was among his colleagues and friends at work.
Craig was was a fellow Project Architect at Ennead -- we were never able to work directly together on a project but I often referred to his exemplary work on other projects to inform my own. He was generous with his time, humble, and extremely thoughtful. We did get to work on some larger office initiatives together and it was always a pleasure to get his thoughts on better ways of working.
When my dad reviewed our family geneology a few years ago he found a Pennsylvania McIlhenny not too far back so I joked with Craig that we we were distant cousins. Now that I know he was a TS Eliot fan I suspect it was actually true.
Craig will always be remembered by those of us fortunate enough to have worked with him.
