Obituary of Marilyn McGirr
Marilyn "Lyn" McGirr passed peacefully at home in Larchmont, NY, surrounded by her children, on January 13, 2020. Born on February 11, 1931 at 5th Avenue Hospital in Manhattan the daughter of James and Lillian Ross. The family moved to Larchmont in 1938 into a house built by her father. Lyn graduated from Mamaroneck High School in 1949 then attended St. Elizabeth College and the College of New Rochelle before graduating in 1953 with a B.A. in Liberal Arts. She taught at a local nursery school until her wedding to Robert McGirr of Yonkers, NY, to whom she was married for 55 years. Mr. McGirr predeceased her in 2008.
The McGirrs lived in Mamaroneck for several years, before moving to Larchmont. She is survived by her four children, Joseph, Noreen (Will), Cathy (Mark), and Lili (Kevin), and five beloved grandchildren Drew, Brody, Kayla, Nicolas, Nora and her brother, James Jr (Marie). Lyn enjoyed nature and enrolled in courses at the Botanical Gardens in the Bronx. Many of her activities were close to home, where she gardened with her husband, cared for the squirrels and birds in her yard, and took in the view of the Sound. Lyn particularly enjoyed the companionship of several Dachshunds through the years, and even encouraged the more talented canines to join her at the piano to howl along. An early advocate of eating healthy much to the consternation of her then teen children, she championed organic foods and supplements. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels and was a 50 year member of the Larchmont Shore Club where she enjoyed swimming and the Theater Club.
Mrs. McGirr was a communicant of St. Augustine’s Church in Larchmont. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, January 18 at 11:30 AM.
