Obituary of Irene Wielgus

Irene Wielgus passed away on January 8, 2020 at The Osborn Home in Rye, NY. She was 97 years old. Born on July 16,1922 in Middletown CT, she was the daughter of Edward Lafayette and Mary Redman. Upon graduation from High School she enlisted in the Navy as a WAVE. She served for the duration of WWII in Washington, DC as a Specialist Q First Class cryptographer. She subsequently attended Bryant College where she met her husband of 55 years, Charles Joseph Wielgus. Mrs. Wielgus and her husband were community minded. She was active in local politics, served as president of the Murray Avenue School PTA, and was a member of The Woman’s Club of Larchmont. Mrs. Wielgus was the owner of Needleworks of Larchmont where she spent many happy years assisting her friends and clientele in needle arts of all kinds. She was an avid reader and painter. When she retired from her knitting store she began oil painting with Alton S. Tobey of Larchmont, and The Senior Citizens painting group at the VFW. She was a member of The Larchmont Shore Club for more than 30 years where she loved to bowl. Mrs. Wielgus had 3 children, Charles J. Jr. (deceased), Paul of Swansea, MA and Martie of Mamaroneck, NY. She was the loving grandmother of 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Visiting hours will be Friday January 17th from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the John J. Fox Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial Saturday January 18th, 10:00 am at Saint Augustine’s Church in Larchmont. Internment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery Hawthorne, NY.
