Dear Karen and Scott,
Thank you for sharing your family with me all those years ago. The times we spent together, while short in duration over a lifetime, are as clear in my mind and dear in my heart today as back then.
I want to thank you for sharing your father with the Mamaroneck High School Community, and especially every track rat that had the pleasure to be called a Turkey by him, watched the clip board go airborne, or heard the whistle when the mind felt as though there was nothing left to give.
He challenged us all, whether in a gym class or a major athletic event, or in our studies. He was not a coach for just the gifted, but was a coach for anyone willing to commit to make themselves better. He established a system so that an average athlete or even an adolescent still growing into their body, willing to train and work hard, could become a High School Varsity Letterman, which many never imagined they could achieve. He pushed and challenged us all for the good of ourselves, at a time in life when choices were many, and not all of them lead to success. While the final choice was always left to the student, it was clear from his words and guidance what choice should be selected. He took so many children and sent them on to their path to adulthood.
I realized when raising my own child, that I subconsciously imitated some of your Dad's traits. I would give my version of the whistle when my daughter was swimming in a race and needed that little extra boost. I found myself providing guidance without requiring a certain outcome. I guess a bit of Mr. Holub, lives on in all of us he touched. My joy is for having known and been mentored by your Dad, my sadness is for all those children growing up without the benefit of George Holub's guiding hand and when needed, directional foot.
Thank you for all the memories,
Mario Ricozzi

The Coach with the Whistle, he was and I was. In all my coaching career in track and soccer, I have used the George Holub whistle. In 1967 my family arrived in Mamaroneck from Malawi, Africa. I was trying to feel comfortable with being uncomfortable in a strange place. So I joined the soccer team and the track team to fit in the American experience. Coach Holub was my first track coach. For four years during my high school, Holub gave me the inspiration to develop the passion for the coaching career. His presence in my life goes beyond sports. His pregame speeches were a welcome moment in my life. How to beat Scarsdale high school speech. He said go home tonight and listen to the impossible dream song from the man of Lamacha, I did and we won the league championship. There is more from the Coach. RIP.

George "Mr. Holub" was my track coach from 79-82. He was an inspiration to me as a young man growing up. His excellent coaching led us to successful seasons. I'll always remember his whistle as we were coming close to the finish line - which of course meant to pick it up as someone was on our tail. Thanks for the great memoirs. You will be missed. I recall one day before a track meet where I was munching on some Twinkies. Yes, sugary, non-nutritional Twinkies. I remember Coach Holub seeing me eating it, and he said to me, "you're going to run up to the bar [the high-jump bar] and do this…" and with his right leg, he gestured the start of a high-jump leap, but had it stop in mid-air … "stuck". Yep, he thought from eating Twinkies, my athletic performance would somewhat "come to a stand-still" that day. I gotta admit — I do remember not performing as well as I could on that particular day! He was right!

So much more than a coach. I remember the whole track team regularly gathered around sitting on the gym floor as he spoke, and we just listened and absorbed. He held our attention and respect all these years later. We were lucky for his influence.

Coach Holub was a huge influence and father figure for me as my track coach at Mamaroneck High School. I also had him for a gym class, where he was also a wonderful teacher. Coach will truly be missed, and will always be loved by all of us. My life would have never been the same had he not been a part of it. I will always love you, Coach Holub. XO
