Obituary of Jerome B. Applebome
Applebome, Jerome Bernhardt. Died at 95 March 26 in hospice care.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Sydel Applebome; sons, Peter and Edward; daughter Louise; daughters-in-law Mary Catherine and Karen; grandchildren, Ben, Emma, Noah, and Julian. He was preceded in death by his sister, Sophie Haines and brother, Ely Applebome. He was born Nov. 27, 1917 in Manhattan and graduated from City College. He worked at Bloomingdales's from 1936 to 1984 serving as merchandise manager; opening the first Bloomingdale's outside the New York Metropolitan area in Philadelphia, and as a vice president in New York. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945 and was a radar operator on the U.S.S. Essex in the South Pacific. He was smart, kind, irascible and astonishingly energetic almost to the end; loved poker, his garden, Sinatra, the horses, and his friends. He was utterly smitten with his wife and was as good a father, uncle and grandfather as could be imagined. In absentia, he offers the world a nice peach. Memorial service Thursday 11 a.m. Fox Funeral Home, Larchmont, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the City College of New York.
