Obituary of Barbara Perkel Bleemer
Barbara Perkel Bleemer died peacefully at her home in Rye, New York on Thursday, November 14th, 2024.
She is survived by her cherished children Nancy, Jill and Jonathan, son-in-law Seth Weitzman, and daughter-in-law Angela Bleemer, as well as her beloved grandchildren Jason and Emily Weitzman, Meredith and Charlotte Bleemer, Daniel Dilorio, his partner Laragh Walsh, and Andrew DiIorio. Barbara is also survived by her loving sister Bette van Es, her brother-in-law John van Es, and many dear nephews and nieces.
Daughter of William and Clare Perkel, Barbara was born in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1932. She graduated from Barnard College in 1953 with a degree in Sociology, then, as a 34 year old mother of three young children, she continued her education, receiving a Masters In Social Work from NYU.
Barbara met the love of her life, Arthur Bleemer, on the Jersey Shore, during the summer of 1950. Art and Bobby married three years later, eventually moving to Westport, Connecticut where they raised their family. They remained happily married for 59 years, until Art’s death in 2012. Their marriage was one of joy, laughter and adventure, as they shared their love of family, travel and, especially, Cape Cod. Their home in Truro, Massachusetts with its magnificent sunsets and beautiful bay, was a haven for Barbara, Art and their extended family.
Barbara cared passionately about helping others, and she dedicated her life to doing so as an Elementary School Social Worker in Norwalk, Connecticut. She was an inspired cook, a crossword puzzle aficionado, a lover of turtles and a masterful writer of short stories and poetry.
Barbara was kind, creative and compassionate. She will be deeply, deeply missed by all who loved her.
