Obituary of Lucille Aitchison O'Grady

Lucille "Lucy" Aitchison O'Grady
January 8, 1953 - September 29, 2024

Lucille "Lucy" Aitchison O'Grady, of Port Chester, NY passed away peacefully at White Plains Hospital on Sunday morning, September 29, 2024, surrounded by her family. She was 71 years old. Born at Port Chester hospital; the youngest of five sisters, Lucy was raised in Larchmont and graduated from Mamaroneck High School in 1971.

Lucy's career journey began in the restaurant industry, where her love for people flourished as she traveled across the country, connecting with characters from all walks of life. It was the birth of her children however, that inspired Lucy to pursue her true calling, as a nurse. She dedicated twelve years to the emergency department at Greenwich Hospital, where her sympathetic spirit and dedication made a lasting impact on countless lives. Lucy instilled a philosophy of compassion and resiliency in her children who looked up to her as a beacon of strength. As a single working parent raising three kids, Lucy obtained her Master’s in Nursing Education from Fairfield University and continued to inspire future generations of caregivers.

Known for her bright smile and infectious laughter, Lucy embraced life with positivity. She communicated openly, making true connections with everyone she met. Her greatest joy after retiring in 2020 was spending time with her four beloved grandchildren, Jane Eleanor, Luna James, Foster James, and Quincy Parker, often engaging them with silly voices and a vivid imagination that brought their adventures to life.

Lucy had a passion for travel and new experiences, frequently attending concerts with her daughter and advocating for public radio and progressive policies. Her warmth and zest for life will be profoundly missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her children, Michael D. O'Grady and Katie (Weindler) O'Grady of Glen Rock, NJ; Connor T. O'Grady and Courtney (Watson) O'Grady of Trumbull, CT; and Avery E. O'Grady of Stamford, CT. She is also survived by her sisters, Mary Walsh, Virginia Tucker, and Clare Burke and her husband Paul, along with many cherished nieces and nephews. Lucy was preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth Edwards, and her parents, Thomas and Mary Ruth Aitchison.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday October 5 from 2-6pm at John J Fox Funeral Home. Words of remembrance will begin at 5pm. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to either the Alzheimer's Association or the Harris Victory Fund.
