Christopher Reisman

Obituary of Christopher John Reisman

The oldest of the five children of Philip and Anna T. Reisman, Chris grew up in Larchmont, N. Y.; he graduated from Mamaroneck High School in 1960 and attended Vanderbilt University. During the Vietnam war he served in Germany as an M.P. in the U.S. Army, and was discharged from the military in 1967. He graduated from the New York Police Academy in 1969. He served in the Ninth Precinct in Lower Manhattan and then the Bronx until he retired as an NYPD detective in 1989, having received two commendations and four Meritorious Service awards. Chris lived in the East Village for many years, where he saw the impact of political and cultural forces on his neighborhood; he was known there for his concern for the quality of life of those around him. A sociable and well-read man who enjoyed many long friendships, Chris maintained close relationships with his whole family; he was interested in their lives and generous with his own. Thoughtfully supportive and famously gifted with an irrepressible sense of humor, he was influential for good in four generations. Chris will always be remembered with great love and respect by his brothers and sisters: Rev. Catherine and Rev. Roderick MacDonald, Peter and Marie Reisman, Irene and Charles Biada, Philip and Rebecca Reisman; and in the next two generations of his immediate family by his nieces and nephews Christie Liberio, Daniela Dussel, Anne and Ben Boyden, Thomas Boyden, Sarah Boyden, Nicholas and Victoria Reisman, John Reisman and Caitlin Huber, Owen Reisman, Charles Biada and Gwen Gethner. Chris’s family and friends are invited to send support in his memory to Doctors Without Borders or to Feeding America.
