I was lucky to be able to live with Phyllis for a few nights a week upon starting my first job in Fairfield County. I spent many nights learning about the gals, world travels via riverboat cruises, life in NYC as a young gal herself, and about one of her best friends (my grandmother) who I sadly did not get the chance to know.
While this list could go on endlessly, I’ll share a few lessons / rules of life that I learned while living with Phyllis:
- Always have a “guy” for everything — whether a huge tree falls down adjacent to the house and you need it removed, or you lock your keys in your car on your first week of work (like I did). “Don’t worry I called my guy” (problem solved)
- The dessert menu should always be reviewed. Red wine and dark chocolate are acceptable at the end of every day — espresso, too, if you’re out (with a lemon peel, of course)
- Keep a group of gals around who you enjoy experiencing life with
- Age is just a number and never let that stand in the way
- Family is the most important
I’ll always appreciate her passion for bringing us all together every year and will forever cherish that time spent with Phyllis.
Love, Ally Z

Dear Peter,
My condolences on your loss. Walter was one of my father's closest and oldest friends, and Walter and Phyllis were favorites of both my parents, Hans & Edith. The last time I saw Phyllis was with my mother (who was considerably older than Phyllis but maintained her friendship with her after Hans died) and my wife when we visited her at her lovely home in Harrison. I believe it was some time after Walter passed. I see that you are in big data. So, is my future daughter-in-law, Ariel Zahler who was at Simon Data, 1010 Data and is now at HEX. Maybe after things settle down for you, our respective families can meet and we can trade anecdotes and memories. In the meantime, I'll look for photos of your parents at my and my brother Peter's bar mitzvahs.
With sympathy,
Steve Harnik

p.s.: Please share your eulogy with me.
p.p.s.: I still remember you at age 6 (or even younger than that?) reciting the 50 state capitals of the union.

Phyllis was very close friends with my grandmother, the late Eleanor Schneider. In fact, I think I was in middle school when I realized that "Aunt Phyllis" and I weren't actually related! It was touching how she always remembered my birthday, which both speaks to her thoughtfulness and her friendship with my grandmother.
I will forever be grateful to have spent an afternoon with her in 2019, a few days before my wife and I moved to California.
Phyllis, you were so good to my family and me, and you were charismatic, stylish, and inspirational on top of it.

It is very touching to see all these beautiful pictures of the long and fulfilled life of my "Tante Phyllis" (aunt Phyllis), as I and my sisters Camila and Silvia used to call her. There is one unforgetable memory of Tante Phyllis, recalling into my mind fills my heart with joy and gratitude: It was in summer 1970, when I, still a teenager, visited New York and the United States the first time. Phyllis and Walter picked me up form the airport and I stayed in their house for several days. Phyllis drove me around and showed me enthusiastically her beloved New York. Yes, it was HER New York, and the way she shared it with me, her love for the city jumped over to me and stayed with me ever since. We had such a fun time. Thank you, and farewell, dear Tante Phyllis!

As we write, it is May 25, 2022, and we are remembering Laura and Peter's wedding on this date in 1980 when the Haas and Myers family merged. Since then we have thanked our lucky stars for in-laws we grew to know and love. We shared many moments over the years from holidays and birthdays to graduations and weddings and in between. We've missed Walter for these 20 years, and now will miss Phyllis as well. Phyllis was the elegant grandmother, gracious, impeccably dressed, yet warm and interactive. These other grandparents learned a lot from her, and appreciate it.
