Obituary of Henry Mayer

Henry Craig Mayer died on February 13, 2022.  He came into the world 36 years ago with severe thoracic birth defects.  It is a testament to his spirit and his medical team that he survived.  His congenital issues affected his health throughout his life.  He had numerous surgeries, infections, and fairly persistent discomfort until finally his body gave out tragically.  Henry was a courageous, brilliant, acerbically witty and deeply loving man.  He graduated from Tufts University and went back to receive a Master’s Degree in Child Development which was his first love.  He worked in the Emergency Room at Children’s Hospital in Boston throughout Covid.  Henry was currently working toward a career in Child Life providing recreational therapy to hospitalized children, something his temperament, empathetic character and experience qualified him uniquely to do. Henry was a natural writer and conversationalist.  He had an encyclopedic knowledge of movies and comic books, and an equal love of Dante, Homer and Sophocles.  He was passionate about the Red Sox, and attended the home games of that glorious 2004 season.  He was uncompromisingly devoted to his family and friends, and above all to his nephews Teddy, Walter, Nate and Ambrose Roscoe.  He leaves behind his heartbroken parents Margery and Ted Mayer, sister Lily Roscoe and her husband Rob, and many surrogate parents and siblings among his loving aunts, uncles, caregivers, cousins and friends.  That he survived as long as he did is the greatest gift to all who knew him.  Yet we are devastated and long for so much more.
