Obituary of James McGarry

James McGarry January 29, 1930 – October 25, 2020, of Larchmont, NY, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family on October 25th, 2020 at White Plains Hospital. He was 90 years old. Jim was born and raised in the Bronx, New York, attended Regis High School, studied at CCNY and graduated St. John’s Law School. He earned his Master of Law Degree from New York University. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Jim was best known for his career as dedicated and trusted Wills, Estates and Trust Attorney, a career that spanned through his 89th year. It was his great intelligence and integrity that drew clients to him, both personally and professionally. He earned respect from Alice Tully who appointed him President of The Alice Tully Foundation where he contributed generously to Lincoln Center for The Performing Arts as well as other philanthropic organizations dedicated to the arts in NYC. He served on the Board and Selection Committee of The Tony Patino Fellowship. He proudly donated his time and expertise to his Alma Mater, Regis High School. James was also honored to serve as Trustee for a number of other Charitable Trusts. He was devoted to his faith and his family. Jim is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sheila, his sister Ann and his six children, Laura McCarthy, Patrick McGarry (Cornelia), Christine Gelnaw (Robert), Karen DiBari (Dominic), Amy Sweeney (Michael) and Steven McGarry (Jayne). He also leaves behind eleven grandchildren, Christian, Nathan, Elly, George, Hannah, Harry, Timothy, Katherine, Michael, Clare and Gavin. Visiting will be Wednesday October 28th from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at John J. Fox Funeral Home in Larchmont. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for James at 10:00 AM at Sts. John & Paul Church in Larchmont. Interment is private.
