My father, Eugene, and our entire family were friend and customers of Don and Joe for over half a century, since they had their station in New Rochelle. Never have I known a kinder, gentler man more devoted to his friends and clients. May his memory be eternal. Bill Panagopulos

Donnie Boy!
I just heard today from a Larchmont firefighter that you’d died during the covid lockdown! I’ve been looking for you, hoping I’d see you in Palmer or maybe even near your old station. Larchmont is not the same without you, Don. Among other niceties—like leaning in the window and chatting about whatever I had on my mind that day—you used to check out my car and fill up my tires before I’d make the long drive to Illinois with three kids—you were a really kind man with a really nice staff. God love you, as my dad would say. Whenever I read CS Lewis, I’ll think of you.

It is so sad to learn just now of Don's passing. He set an example of professionalism, integrity, and good humor to which every businessperson could aspire. Whenever we walked into his garage, we knew we were in competent, trustworthy, and friendly hands. When a community loses a Don Freda, there is no replacement. We offer our heartfelt condolences to his family--may his memory be a blessing.

Don was so great to our family. He always had a smile and a kind word. We have missed him since he left 4 years ago. He was one of Larchmonts treasures. So sad to see him go. A wonderful man who will be greatly missed.

So sorry to hear this. Don was there for my parents, my sisters and me for 50 years, with advice and help with our cars, as well as the great stories everyone remarks on here. I bought three cars from him over the years. I never had to buy a new car because he always had one to sell me that I knew would be good because he stood behind what he sold. He was beloved.
About 3-4 years ago, I jokingly said "I hope you never retire, Don, but I'm amazed you haven't done so already. You must be coming up to about 80 by now, right?" He shook his head reprovingly and said "how old do you think I am?" When he told me his age, it was one of the biggest surprises of my life. To love your work that much, and the people he met as customers and otherwise, is a real testament to his character.
Don was just a great human being.

I knew Donnie my whole life. I worked for him for over a decade. He taught me how to ride a bike, and how to drive a car.
He was one the most generous and wonderful people I have ever known.

Our family has lost a great friend and we offer our heartfelt condolences to all in Don’s family.
His kindness to everyone was constant, his stories, wonderful! Watching dogs being walked and drag their owners to Don’s gas station for a biscuit…priceless! Our dog Bella would run to him and stick her nose in his pocket where Don always had her favorite treats.
Don leaves behind some terrific memories and will be missed.

My deepest condolences go out to the family. Don rented our family the building next door to his station since the 70's. I've known Don my entire life, working next door I was fortunate to have learned many things from him. He was a great teacher, kind man and gentle soul. He loved our dog, Bella, she'd walk herself next door to see Don during the work day and he'd supply her with treats and belly rubs before walking her back to us, everyday. We will miss you very much, Don!

Farewell, Don - one of the kindest, gentlest, and most professional businessmen I ever knew. My father was a customer when Don was in New Rochelle ca. 1963 and we remained loyal ever since. Our sincere, heartfelt condolences.

An extraordinary man who was a pillar to the LARCHMONT community. My dad introduced me to Don over 50 years ago while at a water main break. Don’s garage was located about 100 yards from the DPW where my father worked so they would chat regularly. Later our family relied on DON for his sage advice about life and cars and his always present smile. A wonderful guy who will be missed by all.

I have such wonderful memories of Don - first as a smiling face when filling up my car with gas and as a kind and trusted auto mechanic who took the time to deliver my car back to my house when he knew I had a baby at home. Then when we got our dog, Charlie, we made regular stops to visit Don on our daily walks and our friendship grew. After he retired we kept in touch and enjoyed many lunches at the Harbor House and Nautilus Diner, often chatting so long that they had to ask us to leave because they needed the table for other guests! We'd also stop at his apartment when we were out walking and he never failed to spoil Charlie with the dog treats he always had on hand. We had great conversations and I can honestly say I loved every minute I spent with him. Charlie and I will both miss him terribly. I am so grateful for our friendship and the wonderful memories I have of our visits. He was truly a wonderful man - really one of a kind.

Uncle Donnie (aka the Big Bad Wolf), we will all miss you so much! You were such a big part of my childhood and so much fun! Playing Big Bad Wolf outside in the dark with us while the ‘boring’ adults were inside having coffee, Sunday bowling or horseback riding then going to Cook’s and so much more! I loved how you had us ‘Redo’ this picture when you realized you still had that sweater!
I am sorry we did not get to see you too often over the last few years but you will always be in my memories and heart.
Love Gail (Ciccone), Heinz, Veronika & Christina
