Ed taught me too many life lessons to list. He was the greatest friend that any man could ask to have. He exhibited that wonderful Irish quality of taking his responsibilities seriously, but not himself. Heaven’s gain is our loss. Jayne and I will always love the Flynn family!

My memory of Ed.
It happened a long time ago. Our family lived very close to the College of New Rochelle. We had Ursuline nuns teaching us at Blessed Sacrament grammar school and the nuns lived and went to mass in a chapel at the college.
Both Ed and I were altar boys and we served as such at the college chapel.
After serving mass we ate breakfast with the nuns. I remember traveling to the college from our house. We both rode bicycles to get to mass which began at six in the morning. It was a very dark during the trip to the church but by the time we came home after breakfast with the nuns it brighten up a bit.

Ed was one of the funniest people I ever met. Interestingly, I don’t ever remember him telling an actual joke. It was his stories and commentary that kept his audiences laughing all the time. Had he become a writer, he would have been another Mark Twain. He used his humor to tease everybody in a room, one by one. But to be his target was always an honor.
Ed knew a multitude of things. He was a sports encyclopedia not only of statistics but anecdotes about the lives of several generations of Yankee, Giants and Notre Dame stars. He knew more about them than they did about themselves. He probably knew more about Joe DiMaggio than Marylin Monroe ever did. Undoubtedly, he is right now sitting in a dugout in heaven surrounded by Ruth, Gehrig, Yogi, the Mick and a thousand others, razzing all of them for bloopers they made during their careers.
Ed’s sports acumen was matched by a keen knowledge of movies and great Hollywood stars. He knew all the lines of virtually every actor in one of his favorite movies, “The Quiet Man”. His rendition of Barry Fitzgerald should have earned him an Academy Award. When Ed did his Barry, you would swear he too had been born in the Shamrock Isle.
So naturally Ed enjoyed ancient Irish music and songs. Yet in secret, he was also strongly drawn to opera. Perhaps it was because of the great Irish tenor John McCormack, whose old records he sang along with time and again. But when it came to operas, his leanings were decidedly Italian and mostly Puccini. Tiger Flynn loved “La boheme” the most and often went with Kathy to Lincoln Center to see it live. Reportedly, his handkerchief was soaked with tears every time the final curtain went down. What a mush!
Ed Flynn was that kind of rare bird everybody liked. When he got going, he owned all of us - as a superb story teller, a top tier entertainer, a family man and most of all as a dear friend.
