Obituary of Edith Lillian Solomon

Edith Solomon, beloved wife of Harold Solomon (deceased), sister of Bill Zeligson (deceased), mother of Barry Solomon and Ellen and Michael Chandler and grandmother of Alexander Chandler, died peacefully on Wednesday, March 18. She was 102 years old. Edith was born in McKees Rocks, PA on June 17, 1917 to Abraham and Esther Zeligson. She began her career as a teacher there, leaving for New York City when she married Harold Solomon. She took time off to raise two children and then returned to Hunter College to complete her degree in education. She taught at P.S.96 in the Bronx and also served as acting Assistant Principal and Principal. Teaching was an outlet for both her creativity and music ability. Edith started a reading resource room to help children who struggled with learning to read. She was an innovator who was ahead of her time. Edith touched the lives of so many. When she moved to Larchmont she became active in the Larchmont Temple and ran the senior lunch group for many years. Her curiosity never abated. When she developed brain worm tinnitus she set out to learn all she could about it and kept a running account of the songs she heard in her head. She referred to herself as “the human juke-box.” Edith was a dynamic force of nature loved by so many. She will be greatly missed.
