Obituary of Dorothy McCarthy
Dorothy Shorten McCarthy, a longtime resident of Larchmont, died Sunday January 19, 2020, at the age of 91. Dot was predeceased by her beloved husband of 63 years, Dick McCarthy, who passed away just three months ago, and is survived by her children Andrea (Peter Woolston), Jed (Janis), Amy (Alain LeGuillou), and Tara (Christopher Dube), plus six grandchildren.
Dot was raised in New Rochelle, NY and New Canaan CT; she attended The Ursuline School in New Rochelle, and graduated from Marymount Academy in Tarrytown and the Barmore School in New York. She married Dick in 1955, and spent many years as a devoted mother and homemaker before a 25-year career as a residential realtor in Larchmont.
Dot was known to many for her energy and joie de vivre. She was Westchester Country Club Woman’s Champion in trap shooting as a young adult, enjoyed cross country and alpine skiing in Vermont, was an avid theater goer, and first mate to Dick on a succession of sail and power boats through most of her life. Her lifelong passion was the game of bridge, which she played competitively until just before her death.
Her greatest love and the focus of her life was her family, and she will be dearly missed.
