Obituary of Janet K. Rising

Janet Rising, 81, passed away peacefully at her home of approximately 25 years on January 2, 2020. She grew up with a passion for family, friendships, reading, travel, cooking, opera, and gardening (graciously sharing vegetables with friends and neighbors). She was involved in her community, wherever she resided, from Michigan, to California, to Ohio, to New York. Striving to be a good mother and an active friend was an important part of her life and who she was as a person. She established childhood friendships that lasted her whole life. She was born and raised in Bay City, Michigan by her parents, Edwin and Madeline Koch. She grew up surrounded by many aunts, uncles, and cousins. After graduating from from high school, she attended St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Saginaw, Michigan, where she became a Registered Nurse. She then earned a BS degree in Nursing from the University of California at Berkeley. Her resulting career as a visiting nurse, with a focus on maternal and child care, spanned over five decades—over twenty years of which were spent with Visiting Nurse Services in the Bronx. Over the past several decades in New York, she was active in a number of organizations. She was involved with a Saints John and Paul Renew Group for 35 years and a bible study group from St. Augustine Church. She volunteered with Day Star-Good Council Homes, counseling pregnant women. She served as President of the Larchmont / Mamaroneck Interfaith Council for 10 years. She was a member of the Woman’s Club of Larchmont. She participated in many educational programs (LIRIC) at Iona College in New Rochelle. She was also active with The Fuller Center for Housing in New Rochelle, formerly known as Habitat for Humanity. Janet is survived by her son, Christopher Rising, of Harwich, Massachusetts and her grandchildren, Alexis and Jaxson Rising. She leaves a sister and brother-in-law, Ellen and Ron Jud of Manistee, Michigan, her nephew Brad (married to Patsy) Jud of Holton, Michigan, and two nieces: Annie (married to Mark) Springer of Broomfield, Colorado and Molly (married to Greg) Jud- Sandahl of Eugene, Oregon. Her extended family also includes grandnephews, Evan and Kyle Jud, and grandniece, Amelia Springer. Janet made a positive impact on all those she touched over the course of her life. She was loved by her friends and family, who will hold her near in their memories.
