I have fond recollections of Carl from my years at College of the Atlantic (1981-84). He was one of my favorite people and favorite professors there. I took both his Physical Oceanography and his Calculus classes, and he was demanding and at times no nonsense. But his high expectations and teaching methods worked. I remember one class in which he had us all lined up against the walls, spinning and walking in unison in order to demonstrate how water molecules move within an ocean wave. I also recall being invited to his house on a number of occasions and frequently seeing him out walking his basset hounds. Carl was a unique teacher and someone who really made a difference.

Carl was my professor 43 years ago at COA. He made an indelible mark on my life through his human warmth, his passion for teaching and his infinite curiosity. He challenged me to question my assumptions. Most importantly, he was a friend and an approachable human being. He will live on in all the students whose lives he touched.

I loved Carl. He's one reason I came to teach at COA. He was always so excited about learning - and so open about what he did and didn't know - and amused by both. He was as interested in why it was hard for people to understand things as in getting them to understand them. He was so far out of the box - I don't think he even knew boxes existed. I lived in his house for a while when I first came to COA and spent many dinners talking about how to forge "Human Ecology" as a new discipline, how the college might make the world a better place and how to get it to that place. I was sad to see him leave when he retired, but glad that others would have the benefit of knowing him. He may physically be gone...but his spirit lives on in many.

My deepest condolences to Carl’s family.
I share your loss - what an amazing teacher! As a former student of Carl’s at College of the Atlantic, I made a bet with him about what Math he’d be able to teach me (i.e. I wasn’t teachable). You know who won that bet! Thank you, Carl! I treasure the time we shared.

Dear Lorraine and family,
My husband Dick Lee and I were so shocked and saddened to hear this news. We are thinking of you at this difficult time, sorry for your loss. We first met Carl in the summer of 1978 when he came to Bigelow Lab in Boothbay Harbor ME to work for the summer, and he has been a dear friend ever since, though distance kept us from getting together much. Carl was a very special person - always upbeat, intelligent, thoughtful, and caring. We are better for having known Carl.
