Obituary of Martin Joseph Waters
On Friday October 5th, Martin J. Waters, Jr.(Marty) succumbed to his year long battle with cancer. Marty died at his home in Larchmont surrounded by family. He is survived by, Helen Mitchell Waters, his loving wife of fifty-four years and his children Helen (Jim), Marty (Kari), Heather and John Barry (Jessica). Marty was the proud and loving grandfather to Jimmy, Kathleen, Christopher, Colleen, Finn, Elle, Conor, and Nate. He also leaves behind his beloved dog Rockefeller. Marty was a wonderful father, grandfather, husband and friend. Although longtime residents of Larchmont, NY, Marty and Helen traveled the world during their sixty years together. He took great pride in seeing his children become successful in their chosen fields. Helen also became an advertising executive, Martin III is an attorney admitted in NY and CA and a partner and board member of Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich & Rosati. Heather, an educator, is a social studies teacher at Scarsdale High School and adjunct professor At Hunter College and Fordham University. John is an advertising technology and marketing executive. Marty found joy in following his children and grandchildren's athletic endeavors. Marty is remembered for being a wonderful husband, loving father, devoted friend, devout Catholic, raconteur, tennis player, as well as for his ethics and unique sense of humor.
Marty was born on January 2, 1940 in the Bronx to Martin J. Waters and Helen Farry Waters. He attended St. Helena's School in Parkchester and Fordham Preparatory School, where he graduated in the Class of 1957 and served on the Board of Trustees. Marty graduated from the College of of the Holy Cross in 1961 and was awarded an MBA from Columbia Business School in 1963. After completing service in the National Guard, he began his successful career as an advertising executive and Media Buyer first with BBDO, and later with Jordan, Case, McGrath and Taylor and ITN Networks. Martin was celebrated for transforming the advertising industry with his invention of unwired networking for television. Despite all of his accolades in business he is most remembered for his integrity, generosity and work ethic. As he progressed through his career, Marty was always willing to mentor others, including his daughter Helen and son John.
The services in his honor will be held at John J. Fox's Funeral Home 2080 Boston Post Road Larchmont, NY on Monday October 8, 2018 from 4-8 . The funeral will be held at St. Augustine's Church in Larchmont on Tuesday October 9, 2018 at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Calvary Hospital Hospice 1740 Eastchester Road Bronx, NY 10461 in appreciation of their wonderful hospice care of Marty.
