Instead, we’d like to make a different request that Dilan would have appreciated much more. Dilan was actively involved in effective altruism (EA) and wanted to make this a focus of his life. EA is a philanthropic movement that sets out to do the most possible amount of good in the world with the resources we have. The EA community has established GiveWell as a non-profit organization that finds the best charities in the world, based on cost-effectiveness, amount of impact, and several other factors. Some examples of these charities are Against Malaria Foundation, which protects people from Malaria for an average of $2.50/person for 2-3 years at a time, and Schistosomiasis Control Initiative, which removes crippling, parasitic worms from schoolchildren for <$1/person. GiveWell finds these charities with the intention of directing people to donate to them and save lives, even with small amounts of money. So, instead of sending flowers or any other gifts for Dilan’s memorial, we’d like for everyone to donate to GiveWell charities.
