Obituary of Robert Battaile Hiden
Robert B. Hiden, Jr., a retired partner of the law firm of Sullivan & Cromwell and a res-ident of Rye, NY, died on February 12th, 2018 at his home. He was 84 years old.
Mr. Hiden, the son of the late Dr. Robert B. Hiden and Clotilda W. Hiden of Stock-bridge, MA and later New Canaan, CT, was born in 1933 in Boston. He graduated from Deer-field Academy in 1951, Princeton University in 1955, and following two years of active duty as a naval officer, from the University of Virginia Law School in 1960, where he was elected to the Order of The Coif and the Raven Society. Mr. Hiden joined Sullivan & Cromwell in New York City upon graduation, where he practiced securities, corporate and mergers and acquisi-tions law until his retirement in 2000. In the early 1980's Mr. Hiden established Sullivan & Cromwell's commodities, futures and derivatives practice concentrating on off-exchange commodity-based instruments, and from 1991 to 1995 served as chairman of the New York State Bar Association's Committee on Commodities and Futures Law. Mr Hiden also served on various committees on futures law for legal publications and was a frequent panelist at con-ferences and symposiums.
In addition to professional activities, Mr. Hiden was an enthusiastic yachtsman, skier, golfer, and tennis player. He was active in Larchmont affairs including Little League and Larchmont Yacht Club's Junior Sailing Program, and served as a vestryman and junior warden of St. John's Episcopal Church and for many years as a trustee and officer of Larchmont Yacht Club. Mr. Hiden also was a member of the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee of Hampton University from 1984-2003, a member of the Board of Governors of the Ramapo Col-lege (NJ) Foundation and member of its Audit, Finance, Investments and Grant Allocation Committees. He was also a longtime member of the Dillard Scholarship Committee at the University of Virginia Law School and served as class agent and on alumni committees at Deerfield Academy.
In retirement Bob became a member of the Larchmont-Mamaroneck Local Summit. He served as Summit vice president for a term and continued as a member of the Summit Board. He was a longtime board member of At Home on the Sound where moderated the popu-lar Current Events Forum and was an honoree at the 2015 Gala.
Mr. Hiden is survived by his wife Ann McCracken Hiden formerly of Barrington, IL, his children Robert III and his wife Karen of New Canaan, CT, Elizabeth of White Plains, NY, John and his wife Cheryl of Weston, CT, and his grandchildren Christian, Chloe and Paige.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on March 3, 2018, at St. John's Episcopal Church, 4 Fountain Square, Larchmont, NY 10538 followed by a reception at Larchmont Yacht Club, 1 Woodbine Avenue.
