Obituary of James M. Power

James Power passed away peacefully on October 16, 2017 at Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle, NY. Relatives and friends may visit with the family at the Fox Funeral Home on Thursday, October 19 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM. Fox is located at 2080 Boston Post Road, Larchmont, NY Thursday, October 19 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 7:00 to 9:00 PM. A funeral mass will be held at the chapel at Salesian High School on Friday, October 20 at 10:30 AM. Salesian is located at 148 Main Street, New Rochelle, NY 10801. He is survived by his wife of 59 years Betty Ann (Zimmermann); his sons Matt (of Westfield, NJ) and Jerry (of Pelham NY); his daughters in law Alison and Kim and his beloved grandchildren, Luke, Sara, Brian, Colleen and Grace. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their children. He was predeceased by his brothers Dan and Robert. A proud son of James Aloysius Power and Sara Lehane Power, James was born in the Bronx in 1932 where he was raised and made many lifelong friends. He attended St. Benedict's Grammar School, St. Alphonsus Commercial High School and Columbus High School. He also served in the United States Navy in Charleston, SC. James was active in the St. Benedicts CYO basketball program which started a life long passion for basketball. He coached basketball at Salesian High School in the1960s but stayed involved with Salesian for the rest of his life. His son Jerry was also a successful basketball coach at Salesian. Both Jim and Jerry are members of the Salesian High School Hall of Fame. James also referred basketball at the college, high school and grammar school levels. He was a member of the Larchmont Shore Club, where he enjoyed spending time with friends, playing tennis and swimming. James also worked at the Continental Underwriters Adjustment Company for over 50 years. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donation to Salesian High School or Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
