Obituary of Johannes Albeck
Johannes "Hans" Albeck, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died from complications of cancer on Monday October 17th. The son of Nelly and Andy Albeck, Johannes was born in 1945 in Surabaya, Indonesia to Dutch and Danish parents. He spent his early childhood in Yokohama, Japan and The Hague, Holland before settling in Oakland, CA. Hans attended Cal Berkeley and was active in the Phi Delta Theta fraternity where he was chapter president. He went on to Officer Candidate School and served as an officer in the Naval Supply Corps, including a position as Chief of Staff to Admiral James Forrest. In 1974 he left the Navy to pursue his MBA at Wharton, where he became president of the Student Graduate Association.
Following his graduation he embarked on a distinguished 35 year career in global finance where he held senior credit and commercial banking roles at Citibank, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, ABN Amro, and BayernLB. The first half of his career took him and his family to Milan, Antwerp, Copenhagen and lastly London, where they lived for a decade and became naturalized British citizens. In 1992 the family relocated to Larchmont, NY. Hans held leadership board positions with the Wharton Club of New York and the Risk Management Association and was active in the Foreign Policy Association.
He is survived by his wife Laura, his children Alison, Andreas, William and Elisabeth, his son-in-laws Josh and Neil and his granddaughters Anna Kristine and Charlotte.
He is remembered as a kind and loving father and husband, loyal and devoted friend and passionate and effective leader to the communities and organizations that he was a part of.
The wake will be held at Fox Funeral Home in Larchmont on Friday, the 21st from 2-5pm and 7-9pm. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, the 22nd at 5pm at St. John's Episcopal Church with a reception to follow at Larchmont Yacht Club. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in his memory to the Milwaukee Art Museum, where he had fond memories of time spent with Elisabeth and Neil, or to the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Research Center.
