I met Ben in the 4th grade at Belmont Day School. He was brighter than most of us and quite an athlete. However, it wasn’t until I spent a little time with him at his house in Lexington that I really got a sense of his character. The one thing that stuck out to me was how much he loved his family. Just to see his sister care for her rabbits or his Mom prepping a meal in anticipation of Dr Slates arrival made Ben a happy camper. He wasn’t complicated to me like the other kids. It was his family that were the main source of his pleasure and brought him the most happiness. After that, in no specific order it was the Red Sox, tennis and skiing. This makes me so sad. I’m very sorry for your loss. Love, Dave Katz

So sorry for the loss of your dear loved one. May you find comfort in the scriptures found at Isaiah 35:5,6 "At that time the eyes of the blind will be opened, and the ears of the deaf will be unstopped. At that time the lame will leap like the deer, and the tongue of the speechless will shout with joy. For waters will burst forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert plain." We can be assured of this because "God, who cannot lie..." has promised this (Titus 1:2).

To the Family of Benjamin Slate : I am so sorry for loss. It is never easy to deal with the loss of someone we love. But by looking beyond ourselves to the scriptures we can find support. I have been helped by Psalms 55:22. You are not alone. We can always throw your burdens on God and he will sustain us. I pray you and your family find peace and comfort.

Ben was spirited and dedicated, and everything he committed to he did with his utmost heart and effort. He was reserved yet also very tuned in. He wouldn't say all that much at times, but then surprisingly offer a perspective or reflect on your contemplations, in a way that you knew you were having an intimate conversation, with a close friend, as much as I'm guessing he left just such an impression on many, not just loved ones, even people he just briefly met. He was dry and witty, and although we had many laughs through the times I'm only now years later starting to really appreciate this specific quality of his, savoring the memories of our experiences, his jokes, that much more in this light, like a fine wine. Ben was also loyal to a fault, and even though years post being the closest of friends in college we grew apart some and saw each other but once a year, I knew I could rely on him in a strange way unlike most others, on a moment's notice, that of a true friend. At least this is the spirit of Ben that I remember, that I get the honor of taking with me into my life ahead.
Henry David Thoreau writes: "On the death of a friend, we should consider that the fates through confidence have devolved on us the task of a double living, that we have henceforth to fulfill the promise of our friend's life also, in our own, to the world." And as Patrick Swayze furthers: "... it's a positive way to keep their spirit alive in the world, by keeping it alive in yourself."
I share my deepest condolences with his family, his friends, and all of those whose lives he touched. I hope his spirit is a constant in your future, an inspiration of a richer life for you. Cheers Benny, I carry your spirit now within mine, miss you bud!

In an atmosphere that too often loses sight of humanity in favor of performance Ben stood out as an example of both. He was a true gentleman and the academic rigor and disciplined approach he took was an example to all of us fortunate enough to cross his path professionally. To say he will be missed is inadequate. Ben was a contributor and he talked to management. When they listened they were more effective and it is not a stretch to say that there are patients benefitting today from the judicious manner in which he deployed capital to support drug development. I would have followed Ben anywhere he led. This was too soon.
