Obituary of Philip J. Power

Philip J. Power passed away suddenly on Wednesday, April 13, 2016. Phil was born in Brooklyn on October 14, 1942 to Edmund and Gertrude Power, joining his older siblings Edmund and Joan. After spending his early years in Brooklyn, the family moved to Worcester, Massachusetts. Phil graduated from Assumption Prep and then, in 1964, from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester. After college Phil obtained his MBA from Columbia University in 1966. He then served in the Army and was posted to the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. While working, Phil attended Fordham University School of Law at night, and received his JD in 1974. Phil was married to Jean Geiger in 1969, and they had four children, Philip, Edmund, Julia, and John. The family moved to Larchmont in 1974. Phil worked as a commercial real estate banker in Manhattan for Manufacturers Hanover Trust Company (which later became Chase) and Emigrant Savings Bank. Phil was an active parishioner at St. Augustine Church in Larchmont. He enjoyed sailing, particularly on Long Island Sound, out of the Horseshoe Harbor. He also served as a volunteer fireman in Larchmont for many years. Phil loved woodworking in his basement shop, and among other items made all of his children's beds, as well multiple desks, tables, bookshelves, cabinets, and whatever else was necessary. He was a voracious reader. Phil enjoyed swimming at Manor Park, jogging, listening to classical music, and a good joke. He was equally adept at re-roofing the house, discussing prices per square foot for Manhattan real estate, or fixing the engines on several models of American-made cars. For the most part, he did all repair work in his home. Phil is survived by his loving wife Jean and his four children, Philip (Winny) children, Harlan and Rebecca, Edmund (Julia) children, Graham and James, Julia (Peter) children Thomas, Joseph, and Jack, and John, his sister Joan Tormey, and numerous cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends. The wake will be held at the John J. Fox Funeral Home in Larchmont, N.Y. from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, April 15th. The funeral will be held at the Church of Saint Augustine in Larchmont on Saturday, April 16th, at 1:00 p.m. Phil will be laid to rest at St. John's Cemetery in Worcester, Massachusetts, at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19th. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Phil's name to: USA Province of the Society of Jesus, 39 East 83rd Street, New York, NY 10028.
