Obituary of Richard Patterson
Richard O. Patterson, longtime resident Rye and Mamaroneck passed away quietly from illness on December 24, 2015.
Richard was born on May 3, 1933 to Gordon and Beatrice Patterson, lived in New Rochelle and then moved to Mamaroneck when his father opened Patterson's Service Station on the Boston Post Road in 1944. Richard graduated from the Bellows High School in Mamaroneck in 1951, attending Art School in San Francisco for 6 months. He then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, served a tour of duty in Korea, attaining the rank of Sergeant and was awarded a sharpshooting medal during his tour. Upon return he worked at Patterson's and became owner in 1981 after his father passed and ran the station until his retirement in 2006. Patterson's was a fixture of the community for 66 years.
Richard was married to Pat Patterson, nee Wysk in 1959 and were married for 50 years until her passing in 2009.
Richard was known for his willingness to help others, his love of all things relating to cars (especially Corvettes), traveling across the world with family and friends and his love of bluegrass and Celtic music. He was a longtime member of the Westchester Sports Car Club.
He is survived by his two daughters, Patricia J. Cooper, married to Bill Cooper and granddaughter Rhiannon Cooper of Blairstown, NJ and daughter Elizabeth Patterson of Mamaroneck, as well many nephews and cousins. Richard also always appreciated his service station employees as if they were part of his family.
Family and friends may call on Fox Funeral Home, 2080 Boston Post Road, Larchmont NY on Tuesday, December 29th from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 30th at 10:00 AM at Rye Presbyterian Church, 882 Boston Post Road, Rye, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
