Offensive Line, Larchmont Saints, 1961-1972. Impossible to repay all Ralph did for us. So, in his honor, we will all just "take another lap." R.I.P.

I was a Larchmont Saint for five seasons. Ralph was our coach! He taught me how to block, tackle and tackle in the open field (courtesy of our "infamous" punt return drills--Ralph did the punting!) Ralph taught us audibles, and he taught me some defensive formations and allowed me to call them during the games and make the decisions when there was a penalty assessed against our opponent. We were undefeated in three of those five seasons and won our championships; we took our lumps in the two other seasons--just like Life--you'll win some, and you'll lose some. When you win, you don't let it swell your head; when you lose, you learn from it and don't allow it to dishearten you--you shrug it off and get ready for the next contest. Ralph had a booming laugh that you could hear from all over Flint Park where we practiced and played our home games. He was our "Coach Lombardi." He tolerated no racism, and our team became increasingly diverse as boys from the public schools joined the program in increasing numbers. My brothers and I may well have been among his first public school kids when we joined in the fall of 1964. Acceptance was gradual. In the fall of 1966, I was at home recovering from an ear infection. I saw the Baltimore Orioles beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in four straight games, but I had to miss practice and our first game. Ralph came by to inform me that my teammates had elected me, in absentia, as their defensive captain. I was thrilled! During my five seasons with the Larchmont Saints, I played as a guard, center, defensive end, and middle linebacker. In the fall and winter, I proudly wore a green "Saints" wool jacket that came with a green patch displaying a football adorned by a halo. When an "all-time" Saints team was chosen in 1969, I was picked as his all-time center. It probably didn't hurt that I played center/middle linebacker on our "monster" 1968 team that just blew through most of our opponents. We were loaded with talent on both sides of the ball, and many of our guys were two-way players back then. I also remember Ralph telling us at the start of that season that we'd probably run over the rest of the league, but we might lose the right to claim the championship because one boy who played for us as a split end was technically ineligible due to his birthday. The boy was a talented end and defensive back, but he was not conspicuously big or fast to the point where his presence would tip the field. Still, Ralph said that we would vote as a team whether or not to keep him... We all knew the boy--we all grew up playing baseball, football, and basketball. Simply put, he was "one of us." We voted unanimously to keep him--championship or no championship! We stayed and played together, and we won together. I don't know if there was ever a technicality after the season ended; we didn't care. We won as a team, and the defense only allowed one touchdown that entire season. I still have my old green jersey with a #58 on the front and back--Ralph gave them to us for beating Holy Family 20-7 in the final game that pitted two undefeated teams. That was the closest margin of victory; the next was a 35 point spread. Holy Family had a bigger line than we had, but we managed to beat them. Maybe there is something to that expression: "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of fight in the dog." I also believe that Ralph went out of his way to help some of the boys on the team over the years who may have had unstable family situations at home. Football brought structure, physical and mental discipline, and a sense of belonging even if we all didn't attend the same schools during the day. He might chew us out when we missed an audible in practice or were "doggin' it," but he was all about building us back up so that we'd be ready to play on game day. In the years to come, Ralph would watch our two children grow up at the Larchmont Manor Beach. In time, our two children would become lifeguards there and work several summers there. I know that his influence was good for them too!! Ralph was all about hard-nosed loyalty, physical toughness and love. I played football through high school and college. My college team won a co-championship title in 1976, and I respected the coaching staff and the manner in which we prepared us for our games. We also had terrific talent. Nonetheless, I really learned how to play football under Ralph's tutelage. Years later, a CFO would see me at lunch and greet me with the same metaphorical question about my work as a credit manager: "Bobby, are you blocking and tackling?" I'd smile inwardly and give thanks to the man who taught me how to do so. Ralph, I'm confident that I'll see you again. By His stripes, we are saved. I look forward to the wind sprints, the calisthenics, the punt return drill, the scrimmages, the games, and the togetherness. With love, Bobby Hanway, a Larchmont Saint (1964-1968).

To Ralph's family,
I am so sorry for your loss. Ralph was my boss at Manor Beach in Larchmont many years ago. He was always kind, funny, and a wonderful person to work for. I am grateful for having the opportunity to work with him for many years. He gave many the opportunity to work for the summer in an environment that was friendly and enjoyable. He will be missed by many.
My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
God Bless!

To The Santoliquido family and all his many devoted friends, Ralph - you were special to us in so many ways...showing how to tackle in football, as a boss making sure as teenagers we showed up on time and did our job right, to a friend who was always willing to give advice, even if you were shouting it at us :) but always with love. Your laugh will forever be etched in our memories. To repeat your last words to me, spend time with your family. I will, I promise. God bless you and all Santoliquidos. See you on the other side, boss.
