Obituary of Norma De Ghetto Homer
Norma DeGhetto Homer, born in Clifton, NJ on Dec 22, 1924 to Oswaldo and Mary De Ghetto, entered eternal rest on January 15, 2012. She made a difference in the lives of all she met. Norma graduated Gettysburg College where she met the love of her life, husband and business partner, George M. Homer, Jr.
Norma is survived by her husband of 64 years (George), their three children, Pamela of Irvine, CA, Robert (wife Chrystine) of Katonah, NY, andLeslie Homer-Knippenberg (husband Michael) of Holmes, NY, three grandchildren (Kerri and Jaime Knippenberg, and Brett Homer), and brother David of Norwell, MA (wife Lynn).
In 1955, Norma and George settled in Larchmont where they raised their three children, Pamela, Robert, and Leslie. She was an avid gardener, gourmet chef, seamstress, competitive tennis player, and loved to travel. Norma always made Christmas a special time with her assortment of homemade cookies that she shared with family and friends. In addition to her family life, she was very active in local organizations such as the Larchmont Avenue Presbyterian Church, Westchester Visiting Nurse Services, League of Women Voters, and the Rotary Club of Larchmont.
At a time when female business executives were uncommon, Norma returned to the work force to fulfill a desire to have an impact on the business community. She joined her husband, at his insurance agency, Murray, Schoen & Homer in Mount Vernon. The agency continued to thrive
under their management, moving to Bronxville and ultimately to New Rochelle. In addition to operating the family business, she was a pioneer in the insurance industry. She became well known for her accomplishments as First Woman President of the Independent Agents of Westchester County & the Downstate Council of Insurance Agents, First Woman Recipient of Frederick H. Dayton Award for Outstanding Agent and Community Involvement, Past Chairman of Visiting Nurse Services in Westchester, board member of the Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers, and past board member of the Rotary of Larchmont.
