Obituary of Muriel Bogardus Marvin

Muriel Bogardus Marvin, a lifetime Larchmont resident, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2015 at the age of 91. Born February 24, 1924 in Brooklyn, NY, the only child of loving parents Arthur Gleason Bogardus and Lida Bogardus. She is predeased by her husband of 45 years, Harry Norton Marvin II, her daughter Laurel Marvin and her youngest son Arthur Marvin. Muriel is survived by her eldest son Harry Marvin III and her 2 grandchildren, Avery Marvin and Harry Marvin IV. In Larchmont, Muriel attended the Murray Ave. School and Mamaroneck High School. She graduated from Adelphi University in 1947 with a degree in nursing and public health. She served in the Cadet Nurse Corps during WW2. At the age of 41, Muriel received her Master's Degree in school administration and nurse's education from Columbia University. Muriel was a natural born caregiver and leader, always advocating for what she believed in with courage. Her lifetime of community involvement includes membership in PEO (Public Education Organization for Women); The Larchmont Women's Club; DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) where she served as Regent; Girl Scouts where she served as leader; Sunday school teacher; school nurse and nursing teacher. Along with her husband Harry, she was a founding member of the Larchmont Volunteer Ambulance Corps. Muriel was active in the Larchmont Avenue Church since childhood, across 86 years. As an adult, she served on the church boards as an Elder and Deacon, and various committees. Muriel was a senior flag member of the Larchmont Yacht Club. During summers and winters, Muriel enjoyed spending time in the Adirondacks with her family at their lakeside cabin in Old Forge, NY. She was deeply committed to the Adirondack Mountain Club and Appalachian Mountain Club where she was an avid rock climber. Nothing was more important to Muriel than her family. Her spirit lives on as a woman of great integrity who always led by example. Visitation will take place at the John J. Fox Funeral Home in Larchmont 4pm - 7pm on Friday, June 19. A Memorial Service will be held at 11am on Saturday, June 20, at the Larchmont Avenue Church. Following the service, a reception will take place at the Larchmont Yatch Club.
