The many years that we have been friends with Jen and George, there was never an occasion that George didn't make us laugh. So, thinking of George will always bring a warm heart and a smile.
With love,
Sandy and Michael Latora

I was probably less then half his age when I first met George on the Lawn Bowling grass at The Coveleigh Club in Rye. He was kind enough to show me how to trow a ball, and line it up, even proper strategy. He was patiently explaining the game to me, with his great smile. We became friend at the moment. Everyday I would see him enjoying the sun, at a table with his fiends, the "older kids". I would offer him a drink daily, and he always poletily said, "No thank you, it's kind of you". He had a great attitude and outlook on life. He was always smiling, and politely waving and greeting people.
He was somehow always acutely aware that my son was "special" and would often say kind words like "you, know, I think he's gonna be ok", and "I can see progress!" when others couldn't, or at least, didn't mention it. When his health was fading, and he could no longer enjoy Lawn Bowling anymore, I would encourage him and say "Aaah, it's to hot to play anyway George you're not missing anything"..and or, "You're better off just sitting and enjoying the beuatiful view of the Sound in the cool of the shade" He would just smile, knowing full well, I was just trying to cheer him up as he always did to me.
This week my Son just begun to speak,…. he's 6,.. George, you were right old pal, and thank you.
I'll miss you buddy

Dearest Jennifer, Kathy and Deirdre:
Please accept our deepest condolences on the passing of your dear husband and father and please know in your hearts, we also feel deeply saddened by the loss of our dear friend George.
Jenn, only you can speak about George as a husband, and only you Kathy & Deirdre, can speak of him as a Dad. For us, he was a friend, and a dear friend like few others.
Today, as we honor and celebrate George's long and most unique journey here on earth, we feel confident that he knew how much we loved him in return and now would like to share with you what his friendship of the last forty-two years has meant to us.
At first meeting, it was his gnome-like appearance that caught our attention as Jennifer, his gorgeous wife, was giving him a haircut as he sat on a tree stump on a beach at a resort in the Mediterranean. As if a magnet were at work during this encounter, we were immediately drawn to these two people and as we approached, it was the sparkle in George's eye that invited us into his life; and from that moment forward, we fell in love with him and began what ultimately became, a long-term enduring friendship.
This is what it has been like for us having George McGowan as our friend. This is why we loved him so dearly.
Georgeeeee, as we called him, loved US unconditionally!
And from our life-time experiences with family and other friendships, very few people, before or since we met George, have ever loved us in this manner. George showed us the true meaning of love and friendship, and for that, we have been, and will forever be, in his debt.
George, you were one of our heroes!
You were a joy to be with - your stories brought us years of laughter and happiness, no matter how many times we heard them.
You were a great role-model of endurance, willing to re-invent yourself as the tide of life turned upward or downward.
You were a wonderful teacher, sharing what you learned from history so we would have a better and fuller understanding of the current events of the time.
You offered us insight to the harsh language and difficult encounters you endured from your many experiences as a kid from the Bronx, and then juxtaposed to that side, you showed us your other face; the gentleman who possessed dignified manners and spoke like a well-educated and well-traveled aristocrat.
Page 2
You could be with anyone of any stature and at the close of each encounter with each person in your audience they would depart your presence feeling so much happier and lighter than they felt before you engaged in conversation.
You were respectful and held us in high-esteem, whether earned or not.
You were forgiving when we disappointed you.
You were non-judgmental when we faltered in living up to our side of the bargain.
You were able and willing to recognize and admit your own shortcomings, make fun of yourself for being less than desirable, and did your best to make amends to those you hurt.
You actually cared about us George, and about our success as people, family members, friends and business owners, and greatly helped us when we needed some experienced guidance and support.
You offered an interested ear when we needed to share our troubles and woes, angers and resentments, and our fears of failure.
You opened your home for our many visits and to insure we were comfortable, with each arrival, you re-painted your guest and bathrooms so they would be fresh and clean for your Chicago friends.
And no matter how dark it was for you George when we called, you made it out of the dark and into the light, braved through; up and out of the hole like the soldier you were, to insure that your friends would have the best of you no matter how much despair you were personally enduring.
For us, you were so easy; easy to love, easy to party with, easy to share with our girls; easy to share with our family and friends; easy to share with our customers, easy as a well-worn comfortable old slipper you cherish more than anything new or shiny you could ever possess.
You will not be replaced! As a friend, you were quite unique with qualities few men possess.
So instead of crying about losing you Georgee, we will show gratitude that we were lucky enough to know you, to experience everything about you, and to have remained your friend for so many years of our lives.
Rest in peace George knowing we respected and loved you dearly and will forevermore, cherish the many memories we created together all the years past.

We will long remember George and his wonderful wit and humor. He and my father shared similar traits and now they are probably having a few laughs together. All our love and sympathies to the McGowan Family.
