I met Mrs. Viltz on a trip to New York with my step father, her son, Jerome Viltz. After settling in a hotel room we took a train from Manhattan to visit her in Mamaroneck for the holidays. She met us at the front door of her house and immediately became Grandma Viltz. I remember we played Mensh Argere Dich Nicht around the dining room table and wagered quarters to the winner. She enthusiastically told stories, but not overly. It was a fondly remembered holiday hosted by a warm and interesting lady.
I was fortunate to tag along with Jerome, and my mother Phyllis Viltz, a few more times during subsequent years. Sometimes we showed up with cured meats and goods from various German Delicatessens of the city. Grandma Viltz would quickly make a tray and set it out to share with everyone. Mom and Jerome, understandably, never had an interest for blood sausage, liver, and beef tongue but I have always been eager to try new things and Grandma Viltz was happy to accompany. One year, we bought a durian fruit in the city. It was close to twenty dollars for one fruit which is a lot of money for something that has been banned on public transportation in certain countries due to it's stenchy aroma. It has been written that the smell of durian evokes reactions from deep appreciation to intense disgust, and has been described variously as rotten onions, turpentine, and raw sewage. Despite such forewarning Grandma Viltz was not discouraged and appreciated the experience as if it were a fine cheese.
In fact, I never saw her discouraged and from my ken she was a kind and considerate person that rarely was. I hope not to authorize a misconception because the combined amount of time I spent in Mamaroneck with Grandma Viltz amounts to less than weeks. I certainly cannot conceive for other family and friends she loved so dearly. This is how I remember Grandma Viltz.

My relationship with Grandma Viltz consisted of cards, photos and a few brief phone conversations. Even in the small interactions we had she was able to express to my family and me such warmth and love. From the first time I spoke to her she insisted I call her Grandma, not Mrs. Viltz. She was such a special lady to put a place in her heart for us even though we never got the chance to meet face to face.

Mom, you welcomed me into the family over 40 years ago and I was blessed to call you "Mom" for over 33 years. You were way more than a mother-in-law, you were a dear friend. A woman with such amazing strength, wisdom and caring. You were a wonderful grandmother to Nikole, and she loves you so much. There are so many memories I will treasure forever. I wish we could share one more pot of noodle soup. You will be missed more than you'll ever know. Love always, Kristin

What a wonderful gift to have had this special lady as my mother in law. I began loving her from the very first time we met. There were many good hours of sitting around the dining room table chatting, eating, and playing games - and yes, I believe she may have beaten me at every game! My only regret is that we didn't have more time together.
Mom, the world is a much better place because of you, which is a wonderful legacy to have left for us. You are dearly loved and missed. Phyllis
