When I was little, Uncle John was my cool and fun uncle from New York. Living just around the corner from my grandmother's house, I was always one of the first to know when he was coming home for the weekend and was one of the first to be there to greet him upon his arrival. He called himself "Juano" back then and I was Jenner—a name he bestowed upon me and a name only he called me up until a short time ago when I last spoke to him on the phone. When Uncle John was in town we caught butterflies in Mama's backyard, played miniature golf together at the course that used to be across from Doody's, and we took Aunt Jeanne's car down the "crazy" road to Branford Hill to pick up take-out food for dinner (only on the condition that I promised to never tell Aunt Jeanne of course!). When Uncle John was at Mama's house he was always building something or working on a project. I'm sure we all remember the deck he built in the middle of Mama's backyard for no apparent reason other than he felt like building a deck. Then there was the time he took all the doors off of Mama's kitchen cabinets—a project that took much longer than anticipated. "Relax Mom" he said, "it will look great when it's done!" Memories are a beautiful thing that can take you back to relive happy moments in the past. Aunt Kathy, Jamie, and Jeff—may all your wonderful memories as a family bring you some comfort and peace as you grieve the loss of your husband and father. He will be missed.
With love,
Jennifer

John was my roommate at Fordham University for four years. I couldn't have asked for a better roommate who would become my lifelong friend. We were well matched in that he loved to cook and I was happy to eat his cooking. He was Juano and I was Bogey, but we called each other Nuncle from the line in King Lear ("Give me an egg, nuncle and I'll give thee two crowns."), though in retrospect, I can't recall why we liked that so much. We were both non-morning people, so we'd set our clock-radios to the local AM rock station 10 minutes apart, then proceed to sleep through both blaring alarms while our suitemates pounded on our walls. In the evening, we'd head to the library to study, then would promptly fall asleep among the stacks with our eyes buried in our knuckles. When the closing bell rang, we'd invariably wake up temporarily blinded (this scenario was repeated over and over for 4 years). Somehow we managed to graduate and John who loved NYC moved to Manhattan to pursue journalism while I went off to medical school. As he climbed the corporate ladder, I found it harder to get through, until one day I told his admin assistant to tell John it was his proctologist calling. After that, I always got through to him with that line. Liza and I loved to visit him in the City. We observed that in one of his early apartments outside Gramercy Park, his bathroom windows were not only painted green, but also nailed shut. It turned out that the first time his apartment was burglarized, the thieves took the electronics; the second time, they took his chocolate chip cookies and underwear. While Liza and I always wanted to find a new pub or restaurant, John preferred his favorite hang outs. No matter what, somehow, we'd eventually wind up at Mumbles. I remember that when I was going to get married, John said he'd take me out for a night on the town. Of course, we did finish the night at Mumbles. He was my best man and I was his. He got the worst of it, as Liza and I got married in a non-air conditioned Orthodox church in August with poor John having to hold a crown over my head, while the priest took forever praying in a foreign tongue, all the while dousing us with incense. After Liza and I moved to Colorado, we'd keep in touch by phone or email and the occasional visits to his lovely home, where he was always involved in some home improvement project. He was devoted to his family and he and Kathy made a wonderful life for their two boys who he was especially proud of. Liza and I will miss him immensely, but look forward to sharing many more memories with Katherine, Jamie and Jeff.

Juano and I met at Fordham and we were suitmates for three years. He was a master at turning ground beef into a gourmet meal with his handy electric frying pan, and Felix Unger had nothing over him when it came to mopping and dusting. His fondness for smashed Hostess Cherry pies was second only to his dedication to his family and friends. He worked 2 jobs throughout his college days, but still made time to feed his roomates and get straight A's. Juano was a sweet man and he will be missed but we are all better people for having him in our lives.

Dear Katherine, Jamie and Jeff, Although the weather prevented us from coming to John's services, our thoughts are with you at this difficult time. John was such a special friend to both of us and we will miss him dearly. With love, Mark, Liza and the Boys
