I have been scanning slides of my dad's and some are from the early 1960's and there is Herman. He always looked the same. And now I have stumbled across this. My deepest belated consonances to Stephen, and another piece of my childhood gone.

Dear Lisa, I'm sure you were probably in the hospital room with Herman when he told me in a phone conversation about his deep desire to marry you. Although that never happened, you both knew how much you loved each other and enjoyed your time together to the fullest. What beautiful memories you have to hold on to!!! Take care and please keep in touch.

Dear Herman,
In my hours of loss and sorrow, I need your loving
heart more.
Through all the years of treasures, you were there,
always --
To share all experience
To care, appreciate, support;
To help with life's burdens and difficulties
And bring joy and glistening wonder;
To guide and to learn, ever forward;
To reflect, create, renew;
To understand and protect --
With body, soul and mind --
Solid, always, forever.
How can one heart give? One heart give so much?
That's Herman, always.
I love you. I love you.
Love of my life.

Herman:
There was a beautiful rainbow on the seat of the
car as I walked out. It jumped out at you, spectral
stained glass.
I knew your eye for art; you would have approved.
And I knew it was you saying, Yes, Lisa, Yes. Tell
the world.
Love,
Lisa

Dear Andrea, You're so beautiful, inside and out -- and what a great job raising those kids! It's just such a great continuum for Herman to have -- he deserves it -- and I know his light and values live with you all. To Mikey and Dylan, All his love, never doubt it -- you were his pride and joy. Thanks for the great post cards! Love, Lisa

Dear Rosemary and Doug: Yes, fellow grandparents! How lucky Herman was in that, and in Mikey and Dylan! Thanks so much for you condolences and memories of Herman. I love hearing anything about him. And you, too, have lost. As you know, Herman's love and pride in Stephen and the kids was great and unstinting. Yet Herman was a humble man who was not one to impose himself greatly on his loved one's busy lives. He often said that letting them live the lives they needed to live was important to him. He viewed this as a gift, and I know it was unselfish. But he took every chance he could to see Stephen, Mikey and Dylan -- this I know to be true. And those times, those wonderful dinners and other events, were highlights of our lives. How could they ever be enough? We missed you all when you left. Had it not been for Herman's last illness, going to visit you all would have been great joy. But he was very gratified and pleased to receive Mikey and Dylan's thoughtful post cards to know how wonderfully they were turning out. Happy birthday, Dylan!

Herman was the embodiment of a true mensch. The world is a dimmer place now; may this little light serve to remind us of his example of kindness and generosity in all things.

I would like to extend my sympathy to Rita, Steve and Lisa. During our last conversation Herman and I talked about his illness and his hope for a possibility of recovery despite the somber news he had received from the doctors treating him. He said that there were some things he wished he had done differently and we talked about life in general. Herman then chuckled and told me about the conversation he had the previous night with Mikey and Dyllie and said he was happy to share our grandchildren. He talked about the postcards they sent him every time they visited different places since their move. Herman told me that he regretted not giving time to them when they lived in New York but how happy he was that they've grown up so nicely. He commented about the wonderful way they're being raised and asked me to offer congratulations to Andrea. Herman told me that he appreciated all I did for our grandchildren and asked that I call again. Unfortunately, now I will not have that opportunity to share grandparent stories. Rest in peace, Herman.

It was fun when we used to meet Grandpa Herman by surprise at the Botanical Gardens. We're glad we got to talk to him before he passed away.

"May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be ever at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
And the rain fall softly on your fields
And until we meet again, May God hold
you in the hollow of his hand."
