Moose has been a great mentor, colleague and friend to me. I first got to know him as a doctoral student at Columbia in 1984 when my supervisor Dr.Sam Wolfe recognized that I needed statistical tutelage and writing up methods counselling. Moose did this for me and became my external examiner, kind and demanding alternately, Moose helped me to become a good methodologist in my own right. Later Moose was the external examiner for my first PhD student Roy Dobson, who has graduated two PhDs of his own, as he too is strong in methods, so great is the reach of Moose now a great grand professor. Over the years Moose became a great friend and wise counsellor for me and he loved children. He visited my family during his visit to Saskatchewan to be external examiner for Dobson. He sat in our living room patiently listening to my little 5 year old Merike play the violin and then had her on his knee so she could show him photos of my ancestral homeland of Estonia. He loved children and they loved him. He dubbed Merike as "Shortie" and it endures to this day. We were so delighted when Karen and James were blessed with Emma and Ruthie. Moose touched everyone with his gentle counsel and friendship. Although I shall miss his earthly presence greatly, his influence and spirit lives on.....

Our deepest sympathy to Sue and family. We are saddened to hear of Elmer's death. Even tho Elmer and I were cousins, due to our age difference and the miles that seperated us, I did not know him well until he and Sue came to visit Jerry and I in Fargo, ND. We continued to maintain our relationship over the past 15 years and what a joy and privilege it has been. We had many great times together and I loved his sense of humor. He will be deeply missed.

Our condolences to Sue and her family: Aviva, Karen,James, Emma and Ruth. Moose's personal warmth and generous spirit was evident the first time I met him at Lincoln Hospital some 45 years ago. He was never too busy to see a student who had questions.Moose translated his deep knowledge and experience into a direct, practical, and patient approach to teaching and research. Not only did he make learning fun for me, he had a major positive impact on my own career, professionally and personally. He was best man at my wedding over 25 years ago.
