Obituary of Janice A. Ring

Janice A. Ring
Janice A. “Jan” Ring, a resident of Larchmont, NY, for 55 years, died Oct. 25 at Jack D. Weiler Hospital in the Bronx. She was 83.

Jan grew up in Providence, R.I., where she graduated from Northfield School for Girls in 1959 and went on to study accounting at Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College. At age 22, she became the youngest woman in Rhode Island to qualify as a certified public accountant. She moved to New York in the 1960s and joined Smith Barney, where she was the first vice president and director of finance for many years. Currently, she was working at David Harris & Co. in White Plains.

Jan was a brilliant woman who never stopped working, especially during tax season. But she had many interests outside the office and enjoyed her free time. She was an animal lover who saved many stray cats and was happiest with three or four at home. Crossword puzzles were a favorite form of entertainment, as well as lively debates with friends. She was an avid baseball fan devoted to the Boston Red Sox, and a great sportswoman herself—first a star basketball player in school and then a softball player and coach. For many years, she enjoyed sailing her own boat on Long Island Sound and other New York waterways. Music was another great love of hers, both listening to it and playing guitar and piano. Jan introduced her godson, Rob Mathes, to modern music by giving him his first Beatles album. He has gone on to become an accomplished musician and composer.

Among her greatest enjoyments in recent decades was socializing with friends at Chat 19 and Carlyn’s Cove—where everybody knew her name—as well as organizing annual backyard music parties known as Hoots. Jan was a news junkie and veritable font of knowledge when it came to everything from horse racing to current events, and football and baseball pools. Any information she shared was worth listening to.

Survivors include her beloved wife, Patsy O’Connor; cousins Betsey Dunley and Penny Guise; her chosen family, the Mathes and Kelley-Young families of Old Greenwich, Conn.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews, and treasured friends.

Her parents, Henry and Rosalind M. Ring, and brother David Mellor Ring, preceded her in death.

A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 18 Cherry Lane, Larchmont, NY.
