Obituary of Victor R. Del Guercio
Victor R. Del Guercio Jr., 81, passed away peacefully at The Calvary Hospital, on October 16th surrounded by family and friends. “Vic” was a long time resident of Chatsworth Gardens in Larchmont, NY, where he grew up and attended St. Augustine’s Grammar School. He went on to Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, N.Y., class of 1961 and St. Michaels’s College, Burlington, VT., class of 1965.
Vic was born on September 22, 1942 at St. Vincent’s Hospital in N.Y., N.Y. to Victor Sr. and Catherine Crotty Del Guercio. At age 14, he was diagnosed with severe scoliosis and received the first double spinal fusion performed by Dr. Angelo Della Pietra in Waterbury, Ct where he and his family spent the entire summer while he recuperated after his surgery. Despite the emotional trauma and his subsequent physical limitations, Vic, remained active and positively engaged throughout his life with close friends and relatives. Known for his “one of a kind” sense of humor, fascination with facial resemblances, celebrity initials and crossword puzzles, Vic also possessed a huge heart and caring spirit and he never failed to remember important birthdays with cards and generous gifts for his many supportive childhood friends and family members that he kept in close touch with over a lifetime.
For years, he was also well known in Larchmont by a coterie of clients and passengers he would faithfully transport to the NYC airports and various other locations, regaling them with quirky stories, unique jokes and unusual trivia delivered in his inimitable style to make their trips to and fro more enjoyable and entertaining.
He is survived by his sister, Genevieve (William) English of New Milford, CT., William (Ann) Del Guercio of Ft. Myers, Florida and Lynn (John) DiMenna of Vero Beach, Florida as well as nieces, Laura (Will) Harrison of Katonah, NY, Evan English of Brooklyn, NY, Meredith (Emil) DiMenna-Halas of Nashville, Tenn., nephews, Jay DiMenna of Brooklyn, N., Tom (Lauren) Berg-DiMenna of Warren, Maine, and Brian (Joanna) Walker-DiMenna of Fairfield, CT. He was also a beloved great uncle to Josie and Liam Harrison, Alice and Nate DiMenna and Vivian Halas.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to his numerous home caregivers as well as staff from The Montefiore Hospital in New Rochelle, N.Y., The Osborn Pavilion, Rye, N.Y., White Plains Hospital, White Plains, N.Y., and The Calvary Hospital, Bronx, N.Y.
