Obituary of Josephine Amaral

Josephine Amaral died on July 26, 2024, at the age of 102 due to complications
following a stroke. Known as Josie, or just Jo, she was born in New York City
on November 17, 1921, to parents Charles and Rose Butrico. Jo leaves a son, Robert; and three grandchildren, Alexandra, Dylan, and Kiel. She is predeceased by her husband, Aurelio (Al), brother, Frank and sister, Grace.

She was born at the end of one pandemic—the great influenza pandemic of 1918- 1920 and survived another one in 2020, saw 18 presidents take office and lived through 27 championships by her favorite team, the New York Yankees. Always looking forward, at the time of her death her recently renewed driver’s license was still valid for eight more years!

Jo graduated from Julia Richmond High School in 1939, shortly after her family moved from Manhattan to east 172nd St in The Bronx. She married Al Amaral in 1947 at St.Helena’s Church in Bronx, N.Y., and her only child, Robert, was born in 1962.

The family moved to Larchmont in 1964, where she remained a resident for more than 60 years until her death. She worked for a construction company in Manhattan, the Mamaroneck School District and was a long-standing member of several local organizations, including the Larchmont Shore Club, Bridge Club, Theater Group, and the Widows Club.

Jo was an avid reader and active bridge player who enjoyed travel vacations, going to lunch with friends, cooking and baking, especially during the holidays and for family gatherings. Jo rarely missed a Yankees game on TV and drove almost daily to her Larchmont club where the staff always treated her with special loving care.
