Obituary of Mary Whigham Hargrave

Mary Whigham Hargrave (1930–2024): Celebrating a Life of Art and Inspiration

Mary Whigham Hargrave, a beloved artist and teacher, passed away peacefully in the evening of July 21, 2024. She was born on June 4, 1930, in Pittsburgh, PA, to the late William Whigham Jr. and Elizibeth Arthurs Whigham of Pittsburgh, PA.

Mary’s journey was one of creativity, passion, and dedication. After attending Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts, she met her future husband, Richard O. Hargrave, also from Pittsburgh. They celebrated their marriage on her birthday in 1955 and embarked on a life together that would take them from Pittsburgh to the vibrant streets of New York City in 1964, where she launched her modeling career. Two years later, they settled in Larchmont, NY, where they raised their two children and built a home filled with love and art.

As an artist, Mary’s talent was undeniable. Her oil and pastel portraits, still lifes, and landscapes graced the walls of banks, restaurants, private clubs, and even Gracie Mansion in Manhattan. Her work captured the essence of life and beauty, earning her national recognition and numerous awards. But Mary’s impact extended beyond her canvases.

She was an active member of several Westchester County, NY organizations, and held leadership roles in esteemed art associations, including the American Artists Professional League, the Pastel Society of America, and the Hudson Valley Art Association.

Her dedication to the U.S. Coast Guard Art Program earned her accolades, with a special recognition ceremony on Governor’s Island for her unwavering support.

Teaching was Mary’s joy. For over three decades, she shared her expertise in portrait classes from her home studio in Larchmont, as well as various other locations, and most notably on several cruise ships including the iconic QE II. Her warmth, patience, and passion inspired generations of artists.

Mary is survived by her son, Richard Hargrave, Jr., and his wife, Pamela, of Brewster, NY, and her daughter, Meredith Hargrave Albertelli, of Gold Bar, WA. Her legacy lives on through her four cherished grandchildren: Lyndsay, RJ, Joseph, and Sophia.

In celebrating Mary Whigham Hargrave’s life, we honor not only her artistic achievements but also her unwavering commitment to creativity, community, and family. May her spirit continue to inspire us all.

On Friday, August 2, 2024, Mary’s family will receive friends at the John J. Fox Funeral Home, Inc. 2080 Boston Post Road Larchmont, NY 10538 from 4:00PM until 6:00PM.  Immediately following the visitation, a memorial service will begin at 6:00PM in the funeral home to honor Mary and remember her life.
