Obituary of Dorothea C. Jordan
Dorothea C. Jordan May 16, 1927 – February 23, 2023
Dorothea Jordan our beloved mother passed away in New Rochelle, New York on February 23, 2023.
Dorothea was born to her mother Helen (Furlong) McEvoy and her father Robert A. McEvoy in Brooklyn, New York on May 16, 1927.She was the eldest of 5.
Dorothea attended schools in Brooklyn before enrolling in and graduating from both Berkeley Institute and Immaculata Junior College in Washington D.C. and Chestnut Hill in Philadelphia PA. She completed her education at Fordham University in New York City. It was there she met and fell in love with her future husband Michael Jordan. Both graduated with their Masters Degree in Social Work.
Dorothea and Michael wed in 1954 and began their married life in New York City. After the births of their first 2 daughters they relocated to Patchogue, New York. Dorothea and Michael celebrated the birth of her son and another daughter. She set aside her career to raise her children until they were all in school. Dorothea spent her career working for Catholic Charities. She devoted herself to improving the lives of her clients and their families for over 20 years.She was proud of her accomplishments in her community.
Dorothea and Michael retired to Hempstead, N.C. in 1991. They created a life there enjoying the company of many wonderful friends. They also volunteered at the local school and their local community outreach service food pantry.
Dorothea’s beloved husband Michael died in 1993, but Dorothea remained in their home. She continued to be a vital community member while maintaining a close relationship with her circle of friends.
Dorothea could be found traveling from N.C. to VA. to visit her daughter Regina and her son-in-law Wayne. Also, New York to visit her son Michael and family as well as her daughter Deirdre and her family. Christmases were spent in Texas with her daughter Meg and granddaughter Kaeleigh exploring Texas and all things Texan.
In 2015 Dorothea moved back to New York settling in White Plains to be closer to her family. Her daughter Deirdre was her loving companion and she spent much time at her family home in Larchmont. Dorothea celebrated life’s adventures there with her son-in-law Tom and granddaughter Mackenzie.
Dorothea’s biggest love was for her family and her friends. But it was her children and their families that made her happiest. Her grandchildren Meghan, Zachary, Kaeleigh and Mackenzie created so many memories and participated in many adventures. She shared their successes and offered her wisdom and comfort when time were tough. She never missed a birthday or special occasion to send cards which she loved to do. These memories were her greatest joy.
As Dorothea needed assistance her daughter Meg moved to New York to care for her. During this time Dorothea continued to be a vital force creating and running a conversation group at her Assisted Living to uplift her friends and recognize their importance and self-worth.
Dorothea moved to the United Hebrew Care Facility in September 2022. She became a favorite of her caregivers for her personality, her love of everything coffee especially, her ice cream and her daily viewing of Jeopardy! She never refused her chocolate candy lovingly supplied by her brother Bob. She was cared for by her daughters Deirdre and Meg. Dorothea passed away peacefully surrounded by much love.
The family would like to thank the staff of the 5th floor in the Skalet Pavilion United Hebrew. Such amazingly kind and loving people. We offer thanks to her special caregivers Ida Lee, Jackie, Jimmy, Justice, Celia, Laressa and Althea.
Her daughter Meg would like to recognize her MD. Dr. Mahtab Motieian. You are the epitome of what a physician should aspire to; skilled, communicative and compassionate. My Mom was so blessed and fortunate to have you as part of her life’s journey.
Dorothea was preceded in death by her beloved husband Michael, daughter Regina and her husband Wayne, her son-in-law Tom Coleman, her sisters Rosemary and Helen, and her brother Joseph.
She is survived by her daughter Meg (Kaeleigh) Jordan, Deirdre Coleman (Mackenzie) and her son Michael and his wife Dawn Jordan (Meghan and Zachary) her nieces and nephews and her brother Bob and his wife Medea and their children.
We will miss you beyond words but we celebrate your earthly life and your heavenly reunion with Dad and all your family members. Rest in peace Mom.
