It was the early 1980’s when Mr. Martin was my very first English teacher. I was enrolled at Los Angeles Valley College and I believe the class was English 28. I soon found out what an exceptional teacher he was! He was very knowledgeable, he cared and yet he was very strict and expected quality writing from his students. He shared his love of the English language and taught us to value and respect it through our writing. I think the most profound memory of my college days was created in his class. It was the second or third day of class and he asked all of the students to write about an experience they had over the summer. We had to write 2-3 paragraphs. I think the assignment was to gauge each student’s writing ability.
We came back to class the next day and he was clearly agitated. He let us know our writing needed a great deal of work and that we better be ready to buckle down and work hard in his class. He picked up a handful of Blue Books and dropped them onto his desk, visibly demonstrating his frustration. He said most of what he read was not college level writing. He went on to say that there was one good example of where our writing should be at this stage of our education. Not stating any names, he started reading mine and I could not believe my ears! It was a simple story about a trip I had taken to Iowa for a couple of months. It really wasn’t that great a story but it had the proper order of events, some descriptive language and correct grammar and punctuation. I remember thinking it was good but boy oh boy, the rest had to pretty bad if mine was the best. Later, when he returned it to me it had a large red A+ on it. It was the only A+ I ever received in college.
I decided to take his English 101 class and continued learning under his instruction. There was just something magnetic about him. He was tough and pushed us to become the best writers we could be. To this day I think of him whenever I write and join two sentences/clauses together. He stressed that the correct way to use punctuation was by placing a semicolon after the first clause, followed by a word like however and then placing a comma before continuing on with your sentence. I can also hear him saying, “Use active, not passive voice.” He never let up, always showing us how to become better, stronger writers.
I was so saddened to read of his illness and then death. I lost my father the same way and I know how completely devasting and much too quick it can be. I was so glad to find out that, after he left Los Angeles, his life blossomed with love, marriage, continued teaching, singing and song writing. I’m sure he was as happy as he’d ever been. His world as well as the ground were now stable and secure.
Mr. Martin was a man put here on earth to shine brightly and share his talents, strong personality and kind ways with the world. Though he is gone, he continues to shine on in many, many ways. I went on to become an elementary school teacher and shared with my students so many of the things I learned from him. God bless you Mr. Martin and I know you hear me when I say a heartfelt “thank you.” I truly believe you were a gift to the world. Till we meet again . .

I like music, .....no, I love music. I was involved with it incessantly as a young man; writing (poor quality) and playing, even professionally, (mediocre quality). The Army and the Draft ended any real possibility of improving my relationship with music for many years. When I came back to the US from Viet Nam, the necessities of life (money, career, family) distracted me from squandering large amounts of time on a passion that had no chance of making a meaningful life possible. But life flies by in clichés (the blink of an eye, in a heart beat, faster than a speeding bullet, etc.) and, eventually, retirement became my way of life and I had the time to reconnect with music. And I found my passion to be realized in listening to music. I am good at it. I have given a lot of thought to what makes music important or exciting or enjoyable to me. I won't list everything that resonates with me but a few examples include: lovely, unexpected or unusual word connections (especially metaphor), interesting back stories (the music or the artist), well constructed yet spontaneous instrumentals, seldom heard instruments or uncommon mixing of instruments, let's call this collection "different from the mainstream." I haunt NPR and alternative radio stations, I rummage through You Tube videos, I listen to background music in stores, elevators, and while on telephone holds, I search the cd collections of friends and family.
I stumbled across Terence Martin on NPR a few years ago, and after his death. "How", you might ask, "can you entitle this story "How I met Terence Martin'?" The answer is simple. Unlike most recording artists today, the man's personality, culture, vision, beliefs, and dreams bleed out of his music like spring sap from a broken branch. I know the man having never shared his company or even the same space and time. But God bless him for all times. He has made my passion better for having his passion and being so frightfully good at sharing it.
I believe that in this life, each of us comes to a day on which there is no tomorrow, but that day is also a beginning. Each of us finds the bridge across tomorrow and starts a new life free from trouble and in the company of those we love, a life with tomorrows unending. Terence has made that journey before me; I will come later. My trip will be easier in the excitement of knowing that he has gone before and believing that I may yet meet him. His has been a life well lived and I thank him for sharing it through his music.

In some scientific circles there is a dispute as to whether the whole is equal to the sum of its parts. When attempting to describe a person in his entirety it is impossible to sum them up because we cannot truly know all the small things that we need to add up to get to the whole person. I did not know Mr. Martin very well but I would like to offer some of the parts and some of the bits that I got to see over the past 15 years. Mr. Martin was a chef salad addict. I cannot say that I knew him very well; I would only see him for a couple of minutes everyday, yet for 15 years I saw him everyday of the school year without fail as he needed to get his salad fix. He would come before lunchtime on a daily basis and ask for his salad. I cannot even describe the disappointed look on his face if for whatever reason that salad was not available that day. When he would come into our kitchen we only saw his smile as he did not even need to tell us what he wanted; we already knew. Sometimes he would even order two salads; the one that he would have for lunch and the other that he would take home for dinner. The other image that I have of this man is the one that I built over the years when walking in the hallway going between the kitchen and the main office. His classroom was on my way to the office and its door was always open. If he was predictable with his love of the chef salad, you could also be sure that Mr. Martin's classroom would always be run in the same way. Without exception, he was sitting at his desk; he was facing his students engaging them eye-to-eye in the topic of the day. In fifteen years I cannot remember ever seeing him towering over the class, in fifteen years I never saw him with his back turned to the class while he faced the blackboard. When our staff did not see Mr. Martin this year we did not know the reason for his absence. Last year in June, I had overheard a conversation between Mr. Martin and one of the teachers at the school; he was talking about some future plan or some dream of acquiring a property in California and moving there… We noticed Mr. Martin's absence right away this year. Where was the chef salad addict? We had pictured him on the beach with a guitar in hand enjoying the warm California sun and eating a chef salad of course!

To Amy and Terry's family, Our heart and prayers are with you in those times of sorrow. Terry touched your lives as he touched hundred of lives through his friendship, his music and his teaching. We, at the school, will never forget him. How could we? He was such a brilliant teacher; in fact he was the educator that we all dream to be. He inspired so many students who will remember forever what he taught them: the love and understanding of literature, the formal beauty of grammar, the importance of choosing the right word to express an idea; and last but not least, he also taught them that learning can be fun and exciting. These are lifelong gifts; we are so grateful to him for them. Please accept our most heartfelt condolences. Terry's cousin from Brightlingsea, Essex, England. I was born in 1947 at the same time as Terrys other cousin - Barry Ingold. Terry was already around. We were all part of the Rogers family. Our mums were the sisters Kitty, (Terrys mum), Jean (Barry's mum) and Flo (my mum). The family were very close living within a mile of each other in Dagenham. When Terrys Father secured his position to Lockheads and decided to emigrate to California with Kitty and Terry it was another world. So glamorous and exciting. Every year we looked forward to the annual Christmas card from our relatives in Van Nuys. There was always a family picture and they always included Glenn, Kitty and Terry. My memory of Terry was nearly always with a musical instrument of some sort. I have a picture in my mind of the biggest accordion imaginable! Terry looked so good and I was always envious. My litle sister - Lynda and I were often sent wonderful Xmas gifts from the "Martins". Over the years when Glenn, Kitty, and Terry returned to the UK for holidays their lifestyle sounded fantastic and one by one the rest of the family joined them in California. We last physically met Terry on a visit to Los Angeles in 1976 but were always kept up to date by his so proud mum - Kitty. She loved him so much and was always telling us of his exploits. Every card and letter was always from Kitty & Terry. From the notes that I now read I can see that Terry had a wonderful life and found his own joy and fulfillment. The reports from his pupils are fantastic. At times like this I wish that I had made more of an effort to keep in touch over the years. We are thinking of you all and wish you the very best as the face the future. I believe that you will have wonderful memories to sustain you. Love from a little corner of England. Alan & Mary Goggin. Terry and I went up to Rock Creek together every summer for many years. We wrote the last two CD's up here in cabin #8, which was right above the roaring creek. His Father first took him to Rock Creek as a young boy. Terry would catch our dinner in the creek. I never even got a nibble. The last year we went Michael Cunningham came with us. We were finishing up What Side of Town the day this picture was taken. Rock Creek took the picture.

I realized when I arrived at college that three years of English with Mr. Martin ('86, '87, '88) had provided his students with an unusually strong foundation in writing. My high school writing classes had given me the freedom to enjoy the literature and history I read in college without concern for the mechanics I would need to express my impressions. I have so many great memories of him - letting me off the hook when I misread the Thomas Hardy final essay prompt as "fate" rather than "time," the daily journals we wrote where you could fold over a page for privacy, the 11th grade English students' stunned silence when he explained that anything "longer than it is wide" in a poem is a metaphor for..., sneaking in to school from my chicken-pox quarantine to receive the nice note he wrote me at the end of 12th grade on my independent study project. Mr. Martin, you asked me to define poetry in an essay in 10th grade, and I could never do it justice. Finally, I read a definition I liked. "Language for its own sake." I wish I had known where to reconnect with you to see what you thought of that definition. I'll always be so thankful for the education you gave me.

Dearest Mr. Martin,
I sit now in my room at Cambridge and remember how, several months ago, you alone pushed me to take this chance. "It's an experience!" you said. How right you were, as always. The only thing I regret about being in England--the land of Charles Dickens, Shakespeare, and the Romantic Poets you taught us to respect and love--is being so far from you, and not being able to say goodbye to my favorite teacher and mentor. Over the three years, innumerable quizzes and discussions, and two beautiful literary magazines that we shared, you have provided a place of laughter, of freedom in the commotion and stress that is middle and high school. You've pushed me to develop as a writer, from that first disastrous essay on An Occurance on Owl Creek Bridge to my self-proclaimed opus on Heart of Darkness and Crime and Punishment that you didn't have the heart to grade down (too much) because it veered off-topic. You gave me a home with your candid vivacity, your jokes, and your love for all the layers of literature that you so passionately shared with all those who were so very, very fortunate to be in your class. Dear, dearest Mr. Martin, I am surrounded by the most brilliant minds and passionate hearts, but no one can outshine you. Words cannot express how much you have given me, how much you have meant to me. With love always x

Terence Martin was my cousin. He was the only son born to our Aunty Kitty, the eldest daughter in my father, Ernest Roger's family. He was the first of the cousins to cross the Atlantic, fondly known as the big pond with his parents Glen and Kitty. Terry was 10 years older than me, so I must admit that my memories in the early years are spotty and Terry was in and out of the house either surfing or playing in his band. But it is Christmas which remains rich in my heart. It was the one time when the Rogers' Families (exception of Aunty Flo still on the other side of the pond), got together. We would hang out for an afternoon of food, drink, and games. As my sister so aptly recalled-these were competitive games. Nina, our cousin, will tell you she wanted to hide when the evening evolved into these moments and frequently volunteered to keep score. And, Terry was the "great one" when it came to games such as Scrabble, Categories, or Charades. Though subtle, it was the battle field, a testimony to our family's intellect. We may have come from post war European Immigrants, who were not formally educated, but never the less, we were encouraged to read Thomas Hardy, listen to Beethoven and Mozart and stay current on politics and show up at Christmas with a full load of ammunition. We would engage with great tenderness, say good night with promises and intentions to not let a whole year to by before the next contact. Alas..... As the years have passed, much has happened. Too much to recall in a moment, and too much to hold in one heart. All of our hearts hold reservoirs of private memories, thoughts and recollections. Terry touched our lives on a variety of levels. Yes, he was a great poet, songwriter and teacher. But he was more than a list of his giftings and abilities, he was Terry. For me, he was an engaging wanderer who always came back home to California in July. It was a tradition and my daughters knew that Uncle Terry and Aunty Kitty would be over for dinner. In a short evening we would share thoughts, catch up on our lives, and maybe get to hear a new song he was working on. When he left, usually with a recommended book or CD in hand from my husband John, I had a feeling of being lonely for him. I loved him, but he left so much mystery about himself and I wanted more from him. More than his latest CD he kindly left behind. I am grateful for the time our family was able to spend with Terry this past year before his difficult diagnosis. He was able to spend time at my parents home where his mother resided her last 6 months. And we finally got to meet Amy. Amy, thank you for loving Terry and caring so tenderly for him. Lastly, I will say, as my sister Cheryl expressed, that we too share Terry's younger sister, Michelle's hopes. Terence Martin, may your feet be walking on streets of gold, as you strum a tune of gratitude and honor to our precious Lord, Jesus Christ. We love you Terry, will always remember you and are so grateful for your presence in our lives. God's Peace. Susan Rogers Huebner, with husband John, and daughters Emma and Olivia.

Tribute to my cousin... I am sorry I can not be back in NY this weekend for the services, unfortunately my little one is sick and I can't travel at this time from California, so I'd like to share this. Terry was my cousin....son of my Auntie Kitty who In just this last April passed away at the age of 89. It has been quite a year for our family. I'd like to think, and I hope, that my cousin is in a much better place with his mom and dad in a renewed and healed way, that only our Lord can do. I am thankful that I got to speak and pray with him a couple weeks ago. To tell him I loved him, chat about life, his mom, different things. He told me our conversation just added days to his life...and that really blessed me. We also talked about his love for Amy, who we are so blessed is part of our family. Her love and care for Her Terence in these last days was amazing and beautiful, and still is. It is nice to read all the wonderful accolades in regards to his teaching and music...his passion. But Terence is so much more than that to me. When he moved back east , we didn't see him much, but he was still very much a presence in our lives, especially since our family was so close to his mom who was almost like a grandmother to me. She loved to talk and brag about her son. Many of my memories of Terry come from the holidays as that's when our extended family would come together. Sweet memories of charades and categories....that big smile of his. I remember the day my older cousin took pictures of me as a child with my bright red hair climbing in the big tree in front of the Gault St. house...ever the artist in all he did. You may be gone from this earth, but you are still in my heart. I think Terry would like this quote from CS Lewis on Hoping for Something More “Most people, if they had really learned to look into their own hearts, would know that they do want, and want acutely, something that cannot be had in this world. There are all sorts of things in this world that offer to give it to you, but they never quite keep their promise. “At present we are on the outside… the wrong side of the door. We discern the freshness and purity of morning, but they do not make us fresh and pure. We cannot mingle with the pleasures we see. But all the pages of the New Testament are rustling with the rumor that it will not always be so. Someday, God willing, we shall get “in”… We will put on glory… that greater glory of which Nature is only the first sketch.

I will never forget when Valerie (Gallot) and I asked him to sing, on behalf of the parents association, at the 9/11 vigil in the wake of the tragedy. We were a FANSY family and we needed to come together. Many of the families were new to this country. When Terry sang, it was a very special and important moment for the FASNY Families. What words can express what you did for me? I learned so much from your English classes when I was your student and then learned more about your music when I was your collegue, helping you create your album covers. Definitely good times!!
You will be missed here at FASNY. Not having been able to say Hello, or even Goodbye, makes it even harder to bear our loss!

To Terry's family and friends: When I was 3 years old, Terry gave me my first pitch pipe, unaware that I would turn out to be musically inclined. Years later, this spring, my aunt saw him again and asked him how he knew I'd be a musician. Terry was a wonderful person who touched the lives of many. I recorded a tribute song for him, and posted it on my YouTube accounts. I sang/played guitar for the song "More" by Tyrone Wells because of its powerful message. Life is dear, and we must appreciate every moment of being alive. For anyone who would like to hear, here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Pgc7U4R4ZQ I am so sorry to hear about Terry. Love, Anna Lee
