Ronald Neschis Obituary

Ronald Neschis died peacefully at his home of more than 50 years in Larchmont, NY on June 29, 2026. He was 88 years old. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Janet; his sons Samuel and Benjamin; his granddaughters Imani and Sydney; his brother Martin; and many nieces, nephews and grandnephews.

Ron was born on July 7, 1937 in the Bronx, where he grew up. As a teenager, he developed a lifelong interest in photography. He built a makeshift darkroom in his parents' apartment, and when he had his own home always had a darkroom.

Ron was an excellent student. After graduating from DeWitt Clinton High School he attended Columbia University as a John Jay Scholar. After graduating from college Ron went on to receive a medical degree from SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, completed an internship at Lenox Hill Hospital, and then served as a medical doctor in the Air Force at Andrews Air Force Base. After his time in the Air Force he completed his psychiatric residency at Montefiore Hospital and then supervised the resident training ward at Bellevue Hospital.

Throughout his career Ron maintained a private practice through which he treated patients until he became ill this past February. In addition to his private practice he also worked at area hospitals including Rye Psychiatric Hospital; Manhattan Psychiatric Center at the New York State office building in Harlem where he directed the day hospital program; and St. Joseph's Hospital in Yonkers where he directed the psychiatric in-patient service. His family has been touched by his patients who in recent months have expressed how much he meant to them and wished him well.

Ron always had a curious and adventurous mind. As an adult he learned to swim and sail, spending many days on Long Island Sound after he and Janet bought their dream house in Larchmont in 1974. He would pour over the newspaper and listen to historical audio books in the car while driving. He became fascinated with astronomy and was adept at recognizing stars and constellations in the night sky. He learned to recognize different bird species and had an unspoken kinship with the purple finches that returned every year like clockwork to nest in the lamp on his front porch and the piping plovers that would roam near his summer home in Rhode Island. He loved watching movies, both old and new, and tending to his garden.

Most of all he loved being with his family, and they loved being with him.

A memorial will be held at his home later in the summer.
