To Gene's family and friends,
It is an honor to say a few words about my friend, Gene.
Gene and I met in high school more than fifty years ago. Like so many lifelong friendships, ours began simply, but over the years it became one of those rare bonds that time and distance could never diminish. Even after I moved across the country, we never lost touch. Whenever I came back East, we made it a point to get together, pick up where we had left off, and share stories, laughter, and memories. It never seemed to matter how much time had passed.
There is a passage from Pete Townshend that has always reminded me of our friendship:
"When eyes meet in silence, a pact can be made, a lifelong alliance that won't be betrayed. A friend is a friend, nothing can change that. Arguments, squabbles can't change the contract that each of you makes till the death, to the end. To live your future, it's in the hands of your friend."
That is exactly what Gene was to me—a true friend. We didn't need to talk every day or see each other often. The friendship was simply there, steady and dependable, built on years of trust, shared experiences, and mutual respect.
Gene lived life in his own way. He touched the lives of so many people, and each of us carries a different memory of him. I will always be grateful that I was able to call him my friend for more than half a century.
To Gene's family and friends, we grieve with you today, but we also celebrate a life that was lived fully, boldly, and in a way none of us will ever forget.
Farewell, my friend. Until we meet again.
