Marianne S. Irwin Obituary
Marianne S. Irwin, of Larchmont, New York, died peacefully on June 5, 2026, surrounded by family and loved ones. Born on July 24, 1936, in Scarsdale, NY, to Mary and Herbert Schaumber, she was the second of five children.
After graduating from the Ursuline School in New Rochelle, NY, Marianne attended Manhattanville College, during which time she met her husband-to-be, Bill, on a blind date. Marianne and Bill married in 1957 and began their life together in Eastchester, NY, where they made lifelong friends and began raising five children. Realizing that a two-bedroom apartment was a little too tight for a family of seven, they moved to Larchmont, NY, where they soon welcomed their sixth child.
While raising six children, Marianne returned to college in her late 30s, continuing her education at the College of New Rochelle, where she earned both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in education. Along the way, she also worked as a part-time real estate broker in Larchmont.
Marianne went on to teach math at Hommocks Middle School and Mamaroneck High School in the Town of Mamaroneck for 22 years. After retiring from full-time teaching, she continued tutoring local students, sharing her passion for learning and talent for education with countless students.
Marianne had a generous spirit. She was active in both St. Augustine Church and Sts. John and Paul Church parishes in Larchmont. She opened her home to children through the Fresh Air Fund and welcomed neighbors and friends for holiday dinners. Marianne also volunteered for the local Cancer Support Team.
She loved gardening, family vacations, and family solitaire games—which, with eight players, were not very solitary at all! Marianne was a talented do-it-yourselfer long before HGTV made it fashionable. She was a longtime member of the Larchmont Yacht Club where she enjoyed playing tennis and family paddle tennis games. Above all, Marianne cherished her role as a grandmother and took immense pride in her family.
Marianne was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Suzanne (Suzie) Irwin; her brother, Gerard Schaumber; and her sister, Karen Ferguson.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 69 years, Bill (“and they said it wouldn’t last!”); her brother, Peter Schaumber, and his wife, Kathie of Washington, D.C.; her sister, Sister Mary Nika Schaumber of Alma, Mich.; her brother-in-law, John Ferguson of Greenwich, Conn.; and her sister-in-law, Wynne Gregory of Croton, NY. She leaves behind her children: Mary Kay Chandler of Huntersville, NC; Bill Irwin Jr. (Maribeth) of Ponte Vedra, Fla; Jennifer Filos (Matt) of Scarsdale, NY; Liz Schlosser (Ben) of Cornelius, NC; and Tim Irwin (Ann) of Larchmont. She was a proud grandmother to Christopher, Tim and Marykate Filos; Brad and Kerry Schlosser; Ryan, Theresa, and Will Irwin.
The family is deeply grateful to Marianne’s wonderful caregivers: Nube, Jessica, Esther, Luis, and Marco, for their loving care, kindness, and support.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 12th at 11am at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 18 Cherry Ave, Larchmont, NY.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Swim Across America (SwimAcrossAmerica.org) in Marianne Irwin’s memory.
