Obituary of Marie Bridget Vallely

Marie Bridget Vallely (née Cunningham), 89, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2026, in Stamford, Connecticut.

Born on October 9, 1936, in the Bronx, New York, Marie was the daughter of Michael and Helen Cunningham both immigrants from Ireland. She pursued her early education in New York and went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of New Rochelle. Her commitment to learning and service led her to obtain two master’s degrees over the course of her distinguished career.

Marie began her professional life as a flight attendant for Eastern Airlines and then as a nurse, trained at the Misericordia School of Nursing. She served with dedication in the Emergency Room and Intensive Care Unit at Misericordia Hospital in the Bronx returning to work when her children were older. Her compassion and skill later guided her into the field of mental health, substance abuse and family therapy where she was a nurse practitioner. Thereafter she worked as an addiction and family therapist at Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center in the Bronx before relocating to Cape Cod.

On Cape Cod, Marie continued her work as a clinical nurse specialist in marriage and family therapy at the Gosnold Thorne Clinic in Falmouth, Massachusetts. In addition to her clinical roles, she maintained a private practice as a family therapist, offering support and guidance to many.

Marie was known for her kindness and generosity. A devoted mother and grandmother, she brought warmth and wisdom into every relationship. Her no-nonsense directness was balanced by an easygoing sense of humor that made her popular and deeply respected by those who knew her. As a therapist, she was caring and insightful; as a friend and companion, she was great company—welcoming, honest, and full of heart. On extended cruises, aboard the family sailboat, she kept everyone fed and accounted for despite her apprehension at having four small children roaming an ever-teetering craft. Her grandkids cherish the memories of Summers spent with Nana on the Cape at Corporation Beach.

She is survived by her children John (Marne), Andrew (Susan), and Madeleine; and by her grandchildren Paul, Louise, and Leo. She was predeceased by her beloved son Jesse; her brother Joseph; and her parents Michael and Helen. Marie’s memory will live on through those whose lives she touched with care, strength, and laughter. May her legacy bring comfort to all who knew her.
