Obituary for Linda Coulter
Linda Coulter, 89, passed away in Valhalla, New York, on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of gregarious warmth, passion for altruism and social justice, and dedication toward her family and friends.

A resident of Larchmont from 1959 to 1986, Linda owned and operated the County Boys and Men’s Clothing Store with her late husband, Richard.

The couple celebrated 60 years of marriage in 2016 surrounded by loved ones in Torrington, Connecticut, where they had settled into retirement.

Linda’s most precious jewel and lifelong inspiration was her family – four children, Katharine, Richard Jr., Deborah, and Sue; five grandchildren, Andrew, Stephen, Katharine, Amelia, and Julia; and four great grandchildren.

Born in Snyder, New York, on May 8, 1936, to Adam and Katharine Hauck, Linda was an only child who attended Amherst Central High School where she was a cheerleader and a National Honor Society member.

Linda and Richard met at Syracuse University in October 1954 and married at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on Dec. 29, 1956, where there was three feet of snow on the ground outisde.

Linda was the first member of her family to leave the Buffalo area when she honeymooned in Florida with her new husband.

The Coulters met lifelong friends Sally and Tom Talbot in Yonkers, New York, where they lived for one year before moving to Larchmont where they had Katharine before the new decade started.

Three more Coulter children were born in the 1960s, with the family continuing to strengthen its ties to the Larchmont community by joining its Shore Club and helming its Chamber of Commerce and Lion’s Club.

Linda and Richard were also devoted members of the Larchmont Avenue Church, where they were founding members of an ecumenical group that sought to bring other local people of different religions to find common ground.

The Coulters saw themselves march on Albany in the 1970s when Linda and Richard helped organize the People United to Support Handicap Rights. Back at home in Larchmont during the same decade, the couple also helped start the town’s first-ever group home for people with disabilities.

The “Larchmont era” ended in 1986 when Linda and Richard moved to Heritage Hills condominium complex in Somers, New York, where they lived for eight years continuing to run the clothing store before moving out of the area for the first time to work and live in Chicago.

In the Windy City, the Coulters enjoyed an apartment near Lincoln Park and continued their lifelong passion for theater by taking advantage of Chicago’s breadth of live entertainment.

After a satisfying stint outside of the New York metropolitan area, Linda and Richard returned to the region where all their relatives and friends had remained.

At Lake Ridge in Torrington, the Coulters settled into a retirement that included walks around the lake and up to the nearby horse stables. The summers included fun times at the community pool and winters featured fantastic Christmas and New Years’ Eve celebrations – all with their grandchildren in tow.

Linda is survived by her three children: Katharine Steeger (Dean), Deborah and Sue; grandchildren: Andrew Coulter, Stephen Coulter (Kelly), Katharine Moore (Michael), Amelia Warnock (Ryan), and Julia Steeger; great-grandchildren: Jack, Luke, Nolan, and Charlie. She is survived by her brother-in-law Roland Coulter and sister-in–laws, Anne and Joan. She is also survived by daughter-in-law, Celeste Coulter.

She is predeceased by her parents; husband, Richard A. Coulter; and son, Richard Coulter Jr. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Rosary Hill Home in Hawthorne, N.Y.
