The first time I met Sam he had a warm smile as well as a quiet gentleness.
I learned to know him when Ariel and Meira were first born as we would spend time on the porch rocking and holding our grandchildren-as well as drinking coffee and eating Betsy’s delicious apple pie.
His love of beauty showed in the way he cared for his beautiful garden of flowers that be carefully maintained and was eager to show you and tell you about each one.
I fondly remember taking walks with Sam as we took our time and shared our views on life and family.
He had a fierce and loyal love for his family and especially loved his grandchildren.
I extend my love and sincere sympathy to each of you and especially hold a place in my heart for Betsy.
May these precious memories help sustain each of you through this difficult time.
Sending my love,
Marilyn Keeler

I already miss you, Sam. You were a quietly remarkable man with a terrific mustache. You loved your family fiercely, practiced medicine with great dedication for over 45 years, logged thousands of miles on your bicycle and as many hours in your garden, never stopped learning, and always lived your values: liberty, justice, and health care for all. Love and condolences to the extended Rosenthal and Robbins families.

Sam and I shared some quiet moments during Marc and Ereni’s wedding. Sitting together in the coolness of the Scarsdale Women’s Club lobby we reminisced about our long friendship, raising our families in Larchmont, his love for Betsy and how proud he was of Tom, Ben and Marc. Being a grandfather was a special joy, especially with a new grandchild on the way. So much to be grateful for. So much to look forward to.

Thinking about Sam, two thoughts come to mind:
Many years ago, Sam and I would run together. On one occassion we both were overly ambitious and decided to go for a long run. We ran about six miles and stopped at a fire house for water. Replenished, we ran the six miles back to his and my Larchmont homes street corners. 12 miles, the longest run for the two of us. I went directly to my couch and slept for the afternoon. I think same did the same.
Most recently, visiting Sam at the hospital, when it was time to leave, Mona and Betsey kissed Sam good-by. I told Sam to consider himself kissed by me. Sam smiled.

I have especially fond memories of Sam and Betsy’s visit to see us in Seville, where we were spending the 2016–2017 academic year. David caught a stomach bug just as they arrived, so he was under the weather for much of their stay. With the kids in school during the day, I had the unexpectedly good fortune of spending time on my own with Sam and Betsy. It was so much fun exploring the city together and sharing conversations over good food. I am sad to think of how deeply his absence will be felt, and I hope that the many wonderful memories of him will bring some measure of comfort.

Dr Rosenthal was an inspiration, role model, leader.
He went above and beyond any expectations. He was an advocate for his patients and he will be missed and remembered.

Sam was such a wonderful physician, patient advocate, colleague and friend. I had the pleasure of working with him for 30 years. He was so dedicated to the veterans, but nothing was as important to him as his family. He talked about Betsy and his boys all the time. He had one grandchild when we were both at the VA. I am so happy to read that he later had two more. Those little girls must have adored him. I know how much he loved all of you. I feel so grateful to have known him.
With deepest sympathy,
Noreen Haren

I remember going to a meeting, many years ago, and Sam and Betsy were also at this medical meeting of sorts.
When we got back out to the parking lot, our car had a flat tire. We were clumsily dealing with it when Sam and Betsy came and took over, readily succeeding.
A great couple in so many ways. ❤️

I was at my Aunt Anna's house one day as Sam and Frank were taking piano lessons. I was so pleased with the sound, I asked my Mom for lessons also. That became my first instrument. I took lessons for 4 years. After that French Horn became my love.
To this day I am still playing and performing.
